I would like to know which agency pays the most? Is race really a factor when it comes to the hiring process? Does your GPA matter if you just graduated from college?

babymalachi- The only advice I can give is to not wait for opportunities to start opening the door to you, you have to open that door yourself.

I am taking classes for criminal justice,I would love to become a detective. I wanted to know if my brothers background history would effect my opportunities when becoming a police. I have one brother who's in a federal jail and the other is locked up for attempted murder. I know that a family background history is done. Will this help me or hurt me?

I am an ex police officer (investigator in Child Offences) in South Africa, would love to get back into law enforcement, not possible in S.A as lawlessness is at the order of the day. How do I go about to find out regarding international applications?

I am looing for some info if anyone can help. I am 38 (39 in may) obviously I am too old for the academy, I had planned to get my degree and go , but I was in a M.V.A.(8 years ago) now that I am capable of going ,my age is stopping me,so my question is, do I have to have a degree to pursue anything else in law enforcement, ie: .C.O, dispatcher, police secretary, anything to get my foot in the door. I am very smart, extremely motivated and want this more than anything, so if anyone can help me out, i would be very appreciative. I amnot sure how many credits I have from college, but I did complete all the intro courses to criminal justice.thank you all , hope there is still hope for me. JAN email janf69@yahoo.com

Each agency is different. Find your local agencies Human Recource Department and ask them. Or Google your local department and they usually have steps on employment at the web site. Stop thinking about it and do it!

why do agencies put age limits on the recruits? The one recruiter had to be 280lbs and must have been 50+ . At thirty nine I'm in great shape run a 4.5 40 and a regular athlete. I'll challenge any of these agencies saying I'm to old! Try conditioning your present police and sheriffs it's no wonder some of the bad guys get away they can't keep up! And what about discrimination is not hiring because of age a discriminating act?

Certain agencies have a different approach to selection and testing. Some agencies dont test you at all on police knowledge during selection due to the fact that they believe that one cannot possibly know how to handle ones self as an officer if one has not yet had the formal training in law enforcement. On the other hand, knowledge is power and the more you know, the more you know. It doesnt hurt to learn more and can only help you. Like the article says, talk to your local PD or Trooper recruiter. They will tell you everything they feel you should know before you even fill out the initial application. Any questions can be answered by them. Never be afraid to ask questions! Read articles, learn about police work online, talk to your local law enforcement agencies,it can all only help. Be 100% honest in your backgrounds. Honesty is the best policy no matter what anyone else says. Your honesty will reflect upon your integrity. Good luck everybody who hopes to one day work in law enforcement and, thank you to all those that currently work in law enforcement.
