10th largest city in the nation with the highest standards of professionalism, training, and lowest crime rate for comaprable cities of it's size.
Come join our family and you'll be glad that you did!
I've had excellent supervisors over the years, and think SJPD rises above other agancies in the area.
Highest and most well diverse agency in the nation.
Be prepared to pay high rent and mortgages.
They are an extremely professional organization.
It is an excellent work environment, good people, progressive enforcement profile, Officers are able to change things, implement programs and import new training ideas. People are promoted internally and the agency strives to be first in new ideas.
Apply only if you meet or exceed the qualifications and only if you enjoy law enforcement. Be good a people person and have good people skills and be a good report writer. If you join intend to stay, the retirement is one of the best. Top step for officer is about $104,000 per year as of 2008.
Promotions and assignments are frequently based on race and gender and the merit system is gone.
Go to an agency with the State PERS retirement system. Not here.
The number of supervisors, as with many departments across the nation, has increased four fold in percentage; yet, the per capita of street level officers has risen minimally over the last 20 years. Not enough street cops and an abundance of unnecessary and restrictive rules/procedures, which caries over to U/C and plainclothes activities. Yet, the street level (patrol) police work has always been excellent.
SJPD is in a state of manegerial flux. There is a lot of movement in the upper level right now but it is fairly consistent. Most of the agency is comprised of officers with less than 15 years experience. Heavy recruitment and hiring are in progress. The pay will look very good and it is but SJPD is about 2/3's of the pay down the pay scale for the county. What we have over the other agencies is stability. we have not had a lay off since the late 1970's and to be honest the city can not afford to lay off officers and this is a very strong point. With the senior staff in flux and the attrition rate being very high right now, advancement is continuous, though requires civil service testing and vetting. Rank is achieved solely by civil service testing and not your work product or popularity. All in all, it is a really good place to work and has been an enjoyable career.
Go to the website and look under "Recruiting" and follow the links. They will give you an overview of the agency as well as the testing process. There is mentoring available, as well as a pre-testing and seminars for candidates to attend to learn about the agency. These are really informative and should be attended if possible.
