I was a Deputy for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for almost 34 years (1971-2005). One thing I saw as well as experienced was that the only limit to advancement/promotion was within the individual. Top notch Basic POST Training as well as on going in service training is the hallmark for this agency. I was a "use of force" instructor for a few years until back injury precluded this task. Objectivity in training as an attempt to minimize criminal prosecution as well as civil law suits against officers re: "unreasonable force" is stressed. On going improvements to officer safety equipment is an on going evaluation process. One BIG negative is LASD's (Los Angeles Sheriff's Dept.) "crisis management" orentation which has taken over almost all aspects of the administration. Over all, my experience was very stable, if not "scary" (at times) while serving my dept. Would I do it again (if I could be a 23 year old "pup" just out of the service back in 1971), YES!

Advice for prospective applicants:

Have an open mind and be accepting to critical analysis. A working skill of "street" Spanish is a BIG assect. If a higher level (writing and reading ability) of more formal Spanish is mastered, a "linguistic" bonus pay may be added. Understand that the streets of Los Angeles Co. are far and reaching in its ethnic demographic communities. I don't believe it's too much of an embelisment to state that almost every ethnic community is represented in Los Angeles County. As such, skills in Asian languages is a HUGE bonus. Remember, the vast majority of people you meet, in ALL communities, are average people. They just want to go about their lives. Many live in terror by being intimitated by thugs on the streets. Again, THINK officer safety/survival communicate with with your sister cars re: proceedures of handling "hot calls." Things will open up in your mind as experience is aquired. Lastly, tell yourself, you are a surviver! Never quit--never!

For the most part LASO is a great department with great leadership. Just as any department there are some bad ones. Just avoid Lakewood station because the leadership is very bad. They have no integrity at all. I am sure the nation knows about that station.

Advice for prospective applicants:

Great Department to work for. The best place to work in custody would be MCJ. Its the only custody facility that the higher ups will go to. Alot of the leadership has worked in MCJ.

I worked for a large east coast agency before spending 25 years with LASO. A field deputy has the authority to activate the entire department if he needs to. When you handle something you get it form the start to finish. Few agencies give their line personnel such authority. If you are interested in a true law enforcement career LASD is the place to go. If you want to be a policeman.. and don't mind arduous working conditions with very high call volume this is the place. If you are looking for advancement this is the place. If you are looking to specialize this is the place. If you want a steady career with a department that will allow you to be everything you are motivated to be.. this is the place.

Advice for prospective applicants:

Come from the military.. mommas boys need not apply.. we get enough of those that still live with mommie and daddy and have never been in a fight in their life Get educated, be fit, be morally awake, be ready for the academy, be ready to totally change your life and immerse yourself in being a professional peace officer.

I served for five years with this Department, and it gave me a lifetime of training, experience and knowledge. Unfortunately I had to relocate to Illinois, but I will ALWAYS carry proudly the LASD badge.

Advice for prospective applicants:

Don't be too influenced by the glitz and glamour of LAPD, like I was initially. I gave LASD a shot and although you have to work the custody division for a while, this IS clearly the best Department in the LA area, if not the Nation.
