I have been an officer with the FWC for seven years and make the same now as I did in the academy. The working schedule(5 days a week, nights, weekends, holidays and natural disasters) is very taxing on the family life, especially if you work gill netters, poachers, hunters, etc.., due to the extremely early and late times you have to work. The command staff of the FWC truly does not care about it's employees(There are some amazing Lt's and Captains in the field, but they have no control over the main issues of pay and retention), and does whatever benefits or puts another feather in their hats. There is a lack of experience and knowledge in the field because officers are leaving at an incredible number for better pay and benefits. The FWC is promoting those whose only desire is to promote and not those who would be the best at the job. The main problems are pay and retention. Our agency has over 100 vacancies right now and we cannot fill those positions. I have watched over 50% of my graduating class leave and now I am currently seeking employment elsewhere.
This is a good job if you are young and do not have a family. You will see and do things that other law enforcement officers won't. You will work with hands down some of the best people in the field of law enforcement. After the new car smell wears off, some real negative issues will become apparent and you will realize that you are overworked and underpaid.
This commission is dedicated to helping Florida Wildlife and Florida residents. I have seen time and time again the employees go way out of their way to do the job.
lowest paid state law enforcement, start out usally 10,000 dollars less than other departments throughout the state
prepare to take a pay cut
Well Preforming agency doing a very important Job.
Do it.
It's a small State agency and Florida doesn't give it credit when it really has power to enforce not only land, but all the states waters.
Although this agency is new by name it is made up of the finest officers of what used to be the Florida Marine Patrol and the Game and Fish Commission. Both of these agencies have been around for over 85 years.
Don't come to us if you're looking to get rish. We want those that have devotion and desire to make a difference deeply embeded in their character.
This agency really does not pay us nearly what they should. They are not nearly up to par with other agencies. There are other problems as well.
Make sure it is really what you want to do.
The higher ranks seem to have lost touch with the field. Our leadership is rapidly being made up of unqualified people due to extremely high turnover and the need to fill numbers. Turnover is due to the low pay and low moral. We also lost our focus on our job and do not put the same value on all our stake holders.
Could be best job in the world. However you are not going to get rich and can plan on being micro-managed as well as, constantly changing knee jerk reactions.
