Low Pay but some boses here are ass holes.
To some it up in one word: "PETTY". Regardless of how well you do your job, some miserable supervisor will take vacation days from you if you have white socks on, or don't have enough belt keepers on.
Don't do it
1) PAY and Advancement: Very poor pay for cops 25k start and 60 after 5.5 years because of Ruddy and Bloomberg, but the job does have room for advancement like sergeant (top pay is 96k) and Detective its 84k with overtime both are 100k but you need 10 years to reach that number! 2) Culture: The job is interesting and fun but can be boring and also very dangerous! 3) Leadership: Some Sergeants/LT's/Capts are excellent many are OK and a small number in my experience are very bad. 4) Stablity: You will not get fired by the NYPD unless you do do drugs, steal or commit murder.
I cannot recommend joining unless the city of New York makes the starting pay at least 45k and top pay over 77k since NYC is one of the most expensive cities to live in North America and at this time we are 194th lowest paying PD in the US! As for the cops on the job, We do have a history of corruption and this is because they are not strict with hiring standards, but there are also many very good police officers in the NYPD that go unrecognized. At this time the NYPD is very mixed some cops are excellent and others should not have been hired.
The salary in the NYPD is absolutely horrific. The union sucks. They do a horrible job of standing up for their Officers. The view of the NYPD by the public has SHARPLY went down hill since Bloomberg took office. They do have alot of Specialized Units that you can transfer to, such as ESU and Highway Patrol, and you could get promoted to Sgt, Detective, etc. after a few years on the job.
Apply for the NYPD, but also apply to neighboring Departments that pay more, such as the Port Authority Police, MTA Police, NYC Sheriff's Department, NYC Department of Sanitation Police, and any other higher paying Police Departments you can find. If you cant get into any other Department immediately, join the NYPD, and any other Department calls you once you have joined, QUIT AND RUN.
the NYPD is a good employer buy tha pay is not that great, after a while it goes up but if your starting off as an officer for tha first or second year on the job you better still be living at home. i love the nypd and i think it is the best felling in the world to be protecting and serving one of the greatest cities in the world. as much as the pay sucks i always want to be a cop in new york.
Pay is low. Leadership shaky at best. Plenty of history and culture. Excellent chances for advancement. Decent place to start a career.
Good place in New York to begin your law enforcement career and get your pension started, but keep taking the entrance tests for other, local, much higher paying, less nonsense agencies.
then nypd is too political. i was almost run over by a driver two nights ago, pilled him over and gave im a few tickets, they were pulled out of the box the next night. all because the bosses all do what the jewish community wants them to, not whats best for their cops.
good place to start. not to stay.
Treat its officers like dirt, bosses only care about themselves, internal retribution is horrific.
Take many OTHER civil service tests and get hired by someone else if you can.
With a few exceptions, the leadership of the NYPD is poor. The top bosses are out of touch with what happens on the streets and the challenges the average cop faces. The NYPD does have a rich culture, and one that is uniquely it's own. There is nothing like being a member of the NYPD. The starting pay is very low. THe top pay is also low, but not unlivable. Once you move up the ranks (Sgt, Lt, etc) the pay gets better. Pay for a Sergeant is over $100,000. The NYPD is a very stable job. It's civil service, so you can't loose the job unless you get arrested or commit some serious form if misconduct. While your work hours and work days can change depending on your assignment, most officers will find themselves in a steady tour situation. The advancement possibilities on the NYPD are perhaps the best in law enforcement. With so many members of the service there is always a need for new Sergeant, Lieutenants, Captains, etc. The get promoted, you just need to take a pass a difficult written test. Because of the size of the department, the promotion exams are given quite often when compared to other agencies. If investigations is your thing, the opportunity to move into an investigative assignment and make Detective is there too.
Look past the poor starting pay and remember the chance for advancement.
NYPD is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the world. Their professionalism is world-renown....and, because of them, NYC is experiencing a dramatic renaissance
yes...apply through monster.com.... they do actually pay attention!
