Good pay...but the agency has the same problems any other agency in the state of Michigan has...a crappy economy. The department has been good to me overall (with some serious problems a few years ago). I have been there 20 years and am happy in my job. Our retirement is a big problem right now and needs work so that older folks can get out. Biggest plus: good pay. Biggest negative: If you want to work the road, you will be better off elsewhere. All deps get hired into the jail and stay there until there is an opening. Seniority rules here. Is it paradise? No Is it as bad as the first poster said? No Can you be happy there? Yes
If you want a road job, look elsewhere. If you want to work in a jail, this is as good as you are going to get around SW Michigan
KCSO operates under the "Good ol' Boys" system. Meaning that if you aren't one of the few chosen ones, then you will go nowhere in this department. I've been with this dept. for more tha a decade with a spotless work record. My coworkers respect me, as does my immediate supervisor. However, if I want to receive any non-mandatory training (which would make me a more effecient Deputy), then I have to do it on my own time at my own expense. I have a stack of requests for training that I never received responses from. I haven't received non-madatory training since 2001. Yet, probationary employees can receive the same training that I was denied on their first request, because they are "one of the boys". This is the least progressive department in Michigan. The pay is good. We have a good benifit package. Our retirement is pathetic. We have a large number of very educated and talented Deputies, However their intelligence and abilities are often disregarded. Patrol deputies are dangerously over worked and under staffed...3-4 Deputies patrolling the midnight shift(protecting approx 125,000 residents living in our patrol area). If you want to be a Corrections Officer, than this isn't a bad place to be. But the future doesn't look promising. If you want to be a cop, look elswhere, this place isn't worth it.
Look somewhere else. This place isn't worth it. See above.
because I'm a reserve deputy and don't get paid it is a voulunteer program and I only work when I'm not working at my real job.
If you are a screwup you can get promoted and protected.
The pay is in the top of the scale for this type of Department. But Watch Your Back. The Administration will screw you any chance they get.
