The current "Upper Management" within the department below average.

Advice for prospective applicants:

It is a great department for lateral movement within the department.

As an officer in a neighboring jurisdiction, I've had to deal with DPD hundreds of times. They are rude, and not helpful. They are terrible at getting back to other depts, never get LEIN work sent over, don't help with recovered UDAAs, etc. Granted, it's not entirely their fault, I know staffing is at a low, but there's no need to be an ass to other cops who are just doing their jobs too. If you hate it that much, THEN QUIT!

As a person who doesn't live in the area, I feel that they would rather recruit people from their immediate area. They do not attend recruiting events outside of their area nor do they make the process any better for people that live outside of the area. There are departments such as Phoenix who travel all over looking for recruits.

Advice for prospective applicants:

Make sure that you have the time and flexibility to jump through their hoops. Keeps copies of any contact you have with your recruiter. Even if you send something by fax or mail, make sure you follow up with a phone call. I feel that it would be a good department to be a part of and If I can change anything, id start with redoing their whole recruiting process as it is the door of 1st step to any potential Police Officer with that department.

DPD officers bust their ass every day. They put up with an unreal amount of shit from every aspect of the job, but they are dedicated and would do anything for you. Hardest working men and women in blue! Stay safe!!

Advice for prospective applicants:

The process can take a very long time with some unorganization involved. The academy is demanding, both mentally and physically. But well worth the efforts. Just look them in the eyes and know its a game for your own benifit!

Budget shortfalls and lack of support from the current mayor have depleted the experience and leadership from DPD.

Advice for prospective applicants:

Accept the experience up front. Walk in to the process with your eyes open and enjoy the diversity the department has to offer.
