Animal Planet to Donate Two SUVs to K9 Unit

March 27, 2008
Animal Planet wants to donate two SUVs to the St. Paul police department so the TV network can film a series on the department’s canine unit.
The channel approached St. Paul police a month to six weeks ago about doing a 10-episode series on the unit, police spokesman Tom Walsh said today. A contract hasn’t been signed and “it’s not a done deal by any means,” he said.
Because the film crews wouldn’t be able to fit in the department’s squad cars with the officers and the police dogs, Animal Planet has offered to donate two sports-utility vehicles, Walsh said.
The St. Paul City Council would need to sign-off on the gift and would likely approve it, several council members said.
Animal Planet filmed a one-episode show in St. Paul four or five years ago and “it was a very successful program,” Walsh said.
“Our canine unit has a national reputation,” Walsh said. “I think it would be recognition of the good work our canine unit does.”
