Trial Ordered for K9 Cop Killer

VISTA, Calif.—A man who survived a New Year’s Eve bridge plunge into San Diego Bay at the end of a police chase from Oceanside has been ordered to trial for the death of a police dog taken over the span with him.

Superior Court Judge Joan Weber ordered Cory Nathaniel Byron to trial for drunken driving, recklessly evading police and willful harm to the police dog. If convicted, Byron could be sentenced to more than four years in prison.

The allegedly suicidal 27-year-old Vista man was surrounded by police when he went headfirst over the bridge railing with the dog’s teeth imbedded in his left upper arm. Byron survived but Stryker, the police dog, was killed.

Video of the 200-foot plunge, taken from a police helicopter, was shown during Thursday’s preliminary hearing at San Diego County’s Vista courthouse.

Untill we can get the public/judges/etc. to recognize that K-9 and equine are officers too, there will pretty much be low sentences in cases like this. Oh. And tonyboyum, can I ride shotgun? Nothing like having a "demented housewife" along at times like these! Heh heh heh!

I am not a police officer but i was a JR. Cadet for the Salem police department when i was younger and my dad was a cop in Kentucky. I am outraged that an offericer of the law "even though on 4 legs" was MURDERED and the prick is getting off with a slap on the writst. Those dogs not only train hard they are like family to the handler and their families. I wish that they could give him the same sentence as a Human officer of the law.

As alway's California, is very leinient to the Criminal. After all they don't see the death of a K-9 as a fellow Officer. "A light sentence for an Asshole"
