HIV-Positive Man Gets 35 Years for Spitting at Cop

DALLAS – An HIV-positive man convicted of spitting into the eye and mouth of a Dallas police officer has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Because a jury found that Willie Campbell used his saliva as a deadly weapon, the 42-year-old will have to serve half his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. He was sentenced Wednesday.

Campbell was being arrested in May 2006 for public intoxication when he began resisting and kicking inside the patrol car, Dallas police office Dan Waller testified.

Campbell was convicted of harassment of a public servant.

I am pleased to see that a Jury can convict someone! I hope the Dallas Officer does not contract any HIV, because we have enough trouble with the public, being Law Enforcement Officers.

I too applaud the courts for his conviction. Several years ago, there was a case where a known HIV-Positive prostitute contiued working. She had already been warned in court, that if she continued, the state would push for pre-med. attempted murder...the court stuck to it's threat and she is currently serving a life sentence after propositioning an UC!! I applauded the court system that day and now for this case, for realizing that the actions of a known infected person could ultimately lead to a death sentence for their target. The sad thing is...it could be 5 yrs or more before a positive result is found. Way to push for all civil rights!!!

I am glad to see that this dirtbag got so much time. You have to applaud the court for recognizing that the dirtbags spit was a deadly weapon. Maybe this ruling will help other courts see the light. In NJ, we can force someone to be tested for HIV if the spit on, bite, or bleed on an officer. We have charged attempted murder in the past. Most of the time it has been down graded to agg. assault on an officer and even downgraded to a simple assault and sent back to municpal court. Simple Assualt!!! That shit burns my ass....sadly it will take some shit bird spitting on a prosecutor or a judge before it gets through their heads that it should be an attempted murder charge.

This guy was indicted under a habitual-offender statute that increased the penalty in his case to a minimum of 25 years in prison, because he had been convicted of attacking two other officers in a similar manner and biting two inmates. None of the three officers attacked by Mr. Campbell contracted H.I.V.
