| Description:: | .45 ACP, DAO version of the 4566. Stainless, 4.2 lbs., 4 1/2 in bbl, 8 rd. |
A good solid duty pistol. Easy to use. A little heavy, but the weight reduces the recoil. Not my personal favorite, but reliable and accurate.
At my police department, when it comes to issued service weapons, were a little old school. For some reason through the last 10 yrs, my department has refused to upgrade our service pistols. The 4586 and 4586 tactical, are the side arms issued. The weapon is over twice the weight of side arms currently used by police departments around the country, such as; Glock, H&K, and SigSauer. The weight is felt through out the day, on and off duty. My department requires that we carry our issued weapon on our off duty jobs too. I believe the weight of the S&W 4586 is a contributing factor to my back pain compaired to previous experience carrying lighter more modern side arms. The double action only trigger pull is approximately 10 lbs. Try rapid firing the weapon during shooting on the move training, I was not pleased at all. However standing shooting at a paper target, the 4586 is nice weapon and is accurate. The S&W 4586 is great for civilian home defense and for civilians who are not experienced shooters.
I own this handgun and absolutely think it's one of the best.
To most, it may seem a bit heavy. When I was in the Army I was issued the old Colt 1911, so the 4586 seemed light as a feather.
Pros- Accurate, low recoil (for this caliber) excellent knockdown power and very dependable.
Cons- Low round count, 7+1,a bit harder to target on the move, (unless you're used to it). Due to the weight of the weapon and ammo, I would not recommend this as a duty weapon unless you are used to it.
This weapon is designed to put the bad guy on his butt without multiple hits.
Mine was carried by a Police Officer up until they went to the Glock. He purchased it from the Department and gave it to me after I grew attached to firing it. It's had hundreds of rounds fired through it and is the most accurate handgun I've fired. My hands are big though, and this gun seems to fit better than most, even with factory grips.
I carried this gun for almost six years used it in one shooting. It shoots good but has its problems, Stovepipe, jamming, misfeeds. It is very heavy there for making a great impact weapon.LOL
Although this gun may be a little on the heavy side, it is one of the all time best. I still have one to this day that I carry..
Kinda heavy but easy to get used to. When it speaks everyone listens. I found it easy to use and fell in love with it. I feel the weight helped me keep in on target even when my grip or finger was not quite right. Some complain that it did not have "enough" ammo. But we found it only took one to put the bad guy down. When the ladies first fired it on the range, they complained the weight and large frame made it difficult to handle, but mastered it easily. When I retired, it retired with me and when I pass on it will pass on, to my daughter, for her 'off duty' weapon.
