| Description: | Glock Model 38 .45 caliber G.A.P. A revolutionary .45-auto cartridge that fits into the 9mm/.40-caliber magazine casing. The .45 GAP uses a small pistol primer and it generates higher pressures. Ammo weights of up to 230 grains. Has a polymer frame. This weapon has a good grip, ideal for smaller hands. Very similar to the Glock 37 ACP. |
My dept. issued this handgun to me to replace my Glock 17. The Glock model 38 only holds 9 rounds and that includes the one in the chamber. I am not crazy about that idea for a duty weapon. The model 38 is heavy to me but it is compact to be a .45 cal. Compared to my Glock 17 (9 mm) with 18 rounds to the model 38 with 9, there isn't much difference in weight. The model 38 in my observation is about the size of my Glock 19 (9mm). The model 38 has stove piped on me on several occasions. There were some recalls I heard. Check the Glock website. This is a new weapon. Ammo and accessories were hard to find. Ammo has to be specific G.A.P.. The weapon is great for small hands. Shoots well as I can easily hold a tight pattern. But overall, I am glad I was able to keep my 17 too. If I had a choice, they can have the Glock Model 38 back. The 17 is an oldie but it has never let me down.
While the .45ACP 230gr. HS JHP is my round of choice, I don't see the wisdom in putting less powder behind it...(11.43x23 for the ACP vs. 11.43x19 for the GAP). This is essentially putting a big, heavy .45 bullet in a 9mm case. It just doesn't make sense, even for the tradeoff of concealability, especially when it is issued as a duty weapon.
If I had my druthers, this would be my off-duty carry pistol instead of my agency-issue HK P2000 LEM .40 cal. In fact, the G38 WAS my civilian CCW piece before I joined CBP. Fits my hand like a glove, and I love the idea of a .45 caliber bore in a 9mm-sized package. I've won IDPA matches and held my own in GSSF matches with it. Thumbs-up, HOOAH!
