The Canon Rebel XT is a very good camera as it can be simple enough for the novice, as well as flexible enough for the more experienced. It takes interchangable lenses, including the older F series as well as the newer lenses designed specifically for Canon digital SLR's. Also takes a variety of Canon accessories.

I'm on my second Rebel... they work consistently well, can take a beating and SLR is the only way to go. Interchangable lenses make it a camera for novice to serious photographers.
