Great firearm. Comes with 3 sets of grips to fit any hand. Night sights are great. Had very few misfires.

A female friend of mine bought one, and I have to say that I’m impressed. I’ve been following S&W’s autoloaders for almost 40 years and never really liked them. This model has a lot going for it and I think that S&W is going down the right track. I like the grips and that they are adjustable to the individual shooter. I like the way that it sits in your hand and helps to absorb recoil. The sights are good and clear with plenty of light on either side of the front sight but not too much. I even like the packaging and how it is marketed.

I think that S&W is producing a fine auto pistol with the M&P line and look forward to trying their M&P in .45ACP.

Outstanding gun with accuracy and dependability of a Glock but a far more comfortable grip. Our dept. switched to this weapon from a S&W 990 and our scores went up on average 30-40 points (on a 300 point scale) and no has any complaints that I've heard. Great options for dept.-wide issues (grips, ambidextrious, easy to clean).

My husband purchased this weapon for home security about two months ago. We have only had the privelage of firing it once...but put about 80 rounds through it. I love the different grips (small, medium, and large) that come with it to personalize the gun to your needs. We only had one misfire. I jammed numerous times, but we believe it was the cheaper ammunition we were using, since we threw in a few good rounds of my fathers and it didn't jam once with them. Also...since this was the first time we fired it we think "breaking in" the clips cause a little bit of the jamming also. We purchased this gun at our local Gander Mountain store for much less than it shows on here. They had them clearanced out for about $475. For the price...it is a very nice gun. I look forward to shooting it again, and I feel very safe with this weapon in our home. I would recommend this weapon if you are looking for a good 40 caliber for your personal use.

I bought one of the 9mm compact M&P pistols...so far, it is an excellent firearm. I decided to retire my old Chief's Special and was looking for another back-up/off duty gun, and this one fit the bill. Recoil is easily controlled, and the choice of backstraps allows the gun to fit your hand. Not a bad deal...with 12 rounds in the magazine, and one up the spout. Police price is around $458.00, if my memory servces me.

I spent an hour in my local gun shop looking at every gun they had. I held every gun they had trying to see which one felt the best, was easy to operate, and i felt the S&W MP 40 was the best. although i did not buy a gun that day i had a list of my favorite guns and went to see what the reviews where. well I would rate this one the best. I will be purchasing this one in the near future.

I have been looking to swich firearms. I had it narrowed down to three...the SA XD 40, sig P229, and the M&P 40. Personally, i am not a big fan of the grip safety on the xd 40 and the grip was "off", the sig was a liitle wide but was still comfortable. it would be great but i wanted the same on - off duty weapon and the sig was a little heavy. now the M&P 40 fit great in my hand, easy to conceal, and with the polymer frame was light enough to carry all day, on and off duty. Like commented earlier, shoots and accurate like a glock. I love this weapon!!!!

It seems that Smith & Wesson might have finally done something right in the semi-auto market. Four stars because I want to see if the M&P grows old gracefully.

I have carried a sig P220 for 12 years and it's probably spinning in its case, but the minute I laid my hands on this new S&W M&P 40 I knew it was a match made in heaven. The best semi auto I have ever shot. Accurate, dependable, and a lifetime warranty. Can't beat it. I would also like to alert everyone to a very cheap place to purchase one too. Go to www.budsgunshop.com. I have purchase several weapons for duty/off duty and it would be hard to beat their prices. I got my M&P for $399 plus $30 shipping. If you have to buy your own weapons, give them a look.

I reviewed this gun on the earlier posting of this particular gun. At that time I had only shot 50 rounds through a stock factory gun. Well I don't take back my opinion of guns very often. Here it goes. My department is switching duty weapons from the Glock 22, we have had our in service since 1992. One of the finalists of the process is S&W's M&P 40. I had the luxury of testing the S&W. When testing guns I've always believed in shooting fast, slow, for accuracy, limp gripping etc. The test gun already had 5000 rounds through it and had not been cleaned. I shot it and shot it. I put an additional 1000 rounds through it. It shot great. I'm not sure if the trigger is different for our department from a factory gun but it was smooth and light. I had no malfunctions, PERIOD. The accuracy was on par or better than the Glock. The design of the gun is quite nice and the felt recoil was much less than that of the Glock using the same round (I shot them side by side). Very functional, I think Smith & Wesson has redeemed themselves in the Auto World.

Has great options available i.e. internal lock, magazine safety and external ambi. safety.
Comes with 3 different grip attachments; small, medium and large to provide a great fit to anyones hand. The gun feels nice and balanced in your hand, very comfortable to both right and left handed. To my surprise the recoil was much less than anticipated and allowed for quick follow-up shots with very little muzzle rise after shots. Overall I am extremely pleased with this gun and would highly recommend it. No Jams after 200 rds. of Rem. UMC 180gr. target rounds.

I love this gun. We shot Glock 17s in my academy and don't get me wrong it is a great gun, but my M&P just feels so much more comfortable and shoots better than the Glock. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I plan on buying the Compact sometime down the road as an off duty and back up gun.

Used This weapon on duty in a beach area. Weapon worked great but sights would rust if you were on the beach more then 5 hr. They would have to be cleaned every day to pervent the rust other then that the weapon is good.

Not only is the M&P affordable for anybody. It is the design of the interchangable grips on the weapon that makes it unique. For a person with small hands, this design aids me in a better grip, trigger pull, and control compared to your standard full size firearm.

I DO LIKE THIS GUN, BUT THERE IS A COUPLE OF ISSUES WITH IT. THE ACCURACY AND THE COMFORT ARE AWSOME. THE NEGATIVES ARE THE MAG FALLS OUT DURING USE ALL THE TIME. THE MAG LOCK COULD USE A STRONGER SPRING. I HAVE ALSO HAD A COUPLE OF MS FIRES. I BELIEVE IT JUST NEEDS A STONGER SPRING FOR THE FIRING PIN. mY ISSUES COULD JUST BE BEACAUSE MY M&P .40 IS ONE OF THE EARLY MODEL OF THE LINE. IF IT WASN'T FOR THOSE TWO ISSUES I WOULD RATE THIS WEAPON 5 STAR.

Truly researched/developed for the military and law enforcement. Our agency members are pleased and impressed with it's weight, balance and the all important trigger pull. As a firearms instructor it is the first semi-automatic that no one from our agency complains about. The early problems such as magazine drop out have been corrected by S&W.

Price for this pistol is affordable to just about anyone. Way to go S&W it's about time!

I FIRED OVER 600 ROUNDS THROUGH THE WEAPON AND I WAS IMPRESSED. THE TRIGGER IS DIFFERENT THEN A GLOCK 22. BUT OVERALL IT WOULD BE A NICE CHANGE. ON TARGET MOST THE NIGHT. MAGAZINE EXCHANGE WAS BETTER. PERFORMANCE BETTER THAN GLOCK 22

This is an awesome duty weapon. To quote a fellow firearms instructor it is an 'alternative life style weapon' (not a Glock) and thats part of what I like about it. The M&P is far better then any other pistol I have ever carried. It is comfortilbe to shoot. I put over a thousand rds threw it and it worked almost flawlessly. The light trigger pull (6.5 lbs) is a god sent on long range days. I think that the M&P the on its way to taking on Glock and could possiblby win.

Very nice weapon. Our department change from the S&W 4506 to this. Its a big difference. The only draw back i have is its safety. There is none. We have had some accidental discharges because of the officers not being used to the weapon, and not having the safety de-cocking lever, like the 4506 did. Other than that, it's a great weapon!

Our hospital Public Safety Dept. just switched to this weapon. I didn't like the price, since I am used to the P94 by Ruger. I went to the range today and I must admit......Nice firing weapon. It is lot lighter than the Ruger even when loaded. Love all the safety features, including the magazine safety. The recoil is very minimum, which is great for firing weak hand. The interchangeable grips are an added bonus.

We just transitioned to this from the S&W 99. I liked the 99 despite its bad rap. But this is a vast improvement. The M&P .40 is BY FAR on of the smoothest firearms I've fired. The weapon just feels good in the hand from the moment you clear leather till you empty the mag. If I ever move to a department that issues something different I will definately purchase and M&P for my personal use.

This is a very well made firearm. I received it as a standard issue for my dept. and it took me through my first ever handgun qualifying course. The interchangeable grips create a better feel and the gun just feels solid, but not overly heavy. I've had a few malfunctions while on the range, but I am not sure whether the firearm or cheap ammunition is to blame.
