This semi-automatic high maintenance rifle does the job. Make sure it's well lubricated before use, or it will tend to jam frequently. The shorter barrel doesn't allow for long range engagement, however, the compactness is great for urban or emergency response use. The rail system is pretty nifty, allowing for almost an endless combination of accessories.

I lvoe my M4, I also have the M203 Gernade attachment as well. I have never had it jam, and the parts are easy to replace if in a crunch. It is the MP choice weapon as well as Infantry, due to the collapsable but stock for building and room clearing. WIth the burst selection, you can laydown a continous fire while putting the steel where it counts.

I bought an M4 due to the workmanship and relability of the M16 I carried in the Army. I could have gotten cheaper, but Colt was the only way I wanted to go. This should be issued to all certified LEOs for a little extra at work.

Extremely accurate, versatile, and deadly. Like the M-16, it's very finicky so be aware of that prior to taking one to the field. If well-cared for, this weapon will serve you well time and time again. The length makes it great for urban fighting and tight spots (hallways, choked streets, etc), yet will still be accurate to several hundred meters.

Great multi-purpose weapon. Working in a rural environment there are many tactical and officer safety considerations that need to be considered. Having the ability to use this in a rural setting and also having the ability to adapt to a city environment by changing ammo is a great tool to have!

Michigan State Police recently transitioned to this weapon, after years with H&K. I love it. My only hang up is the fact that it is .223, I would have preferred a long gun in .308.

Bushmaster is strong competition, but Colt is good. I had the opportunity of carrying the M-16 daily for more than a year. The M4A1 is an upgrade, and the carbine size is handy for short to medium range engagement. It is ideal for clearing buildings, and with the right ammo can actually penetrate less wall layers than police-duty handguns.

Keep it clean and don't let the carbon build up on the gas port. That may not be as necessary today as it used to be, but I did have a jam during a fire-fight. Fortunately, my brothers "take care of their own," and laid down enough fire to mask the malfunction I had.

It's ability to be completely modular is very useful - I love mine - however, just because it is good, does not mean that it can not be out-classed, by less expensive, even more reliable rifles. The AK-47 comes to mind, and, the AK can be every bit as modular as the AR-15 for half the cost. All in all, the M4A1 is a handy, accurate rifle, but it could benefit from new internal designs. Bushmaster seems to have a new version of the old gas system, a piston inside the gas tube. I enough fun disassembling my upper to clean out the gas tube let alone a piston to worry about - I think it just adds more to the process of maintaining and that's a bad idea. The easier, the better, which is what good designs are made of - like the AK. Still love my kitty-kat and M4A3, though.

It's okay. Everyone knows about this weapon and it's characteristics. The only thing I would change it a 1:3 ratio of tracers if your armory hands out loaded mags.

I love this weapon. I've been using it for my 6 years in the military. It is the weapon of choice for the MP corp. I've never had any problems with this weapon. I once blew through 10 full magazines and never had one problem. Really light and easy to steady when sighting in on something. Excellent weapon.

I personally like the rifle, it's alot easier to use and move with than the M16. However it doesn't do too well in sandy areas or when fired in automatic for long periods of time. Other than that I like the weapon and it has alot of attachments and modifications avalible.

No other weapon carries the accuracy, capacity, and daunting aura than the M4. An officer with an M4 slung over their shoulder can create havoc on armed criminals. With the proper light system, the M4 can be easily deployed in everyday versus extreme situations. A must have for any beat officer/swat/entry team member.

Its a Colt.....Its a rifle that does its job. I carry one and have never had a problem with it. The 5.56/ 223 round is not a long range round. Keep the cartridge limitations in mind and you wont be disappointed.

I love this weapon!!! The rail systems allow you to have an endless amount of accessories to add to the weapon. The adjustable stock allows you to quickly make the M-4 a close quartercombat weapon when needed and you can lengthen the stock to your preference for distance shooting. It is high maintenence, but once you get used to taking care of your weapon it takes no time to do. This weapon is superior to the M-16, and the M-4 definetly saved my butt several times in the desert.

For the price there are few weapons systems that work as well as this rifle. It is a nice tight fit with tactical teams, and so common that multi-agency teams have common ammo and gear. It doesn't have the long range capability of the M16, but still has a solid range. If the weapon is taken care of it will be reliable and you can depend on it when you need it. Our Department has had them for almost nine years and they are a perfect fit. The rail give us the option to custom fit what we want, how we want, to each rifle. There are some better rifles out there but this one is among the best.

this is a very accurate weapon and very reliable, but like other people say it does need fequent lubing, I have worked the firing range when people are qualifying on this weapon and have seen just how well it is a shooters gun, and I have seen them jam up like crazy, when firing multiple rounds throuth it you almost have to keep a bottle of CLP next to you, but over all it is a ok weapon.

I found that the M4A1 rifle is a practical weapon for urban operations IN THE IDEAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. Unfortunately, this weapon has the annoying tendency to jam when a minimum of dust or sand gets into the bolt. Again, in IDEAL conditions the weapon is very accurate and easy to fire. There is really no good solution to the jamming problem because even if your weapon was in pristine condition when you start firing, if sand is introduced into the chamber there is a high probability that it will jam. By adding lubricant, you create a sort of gummy mixture that tends to cause the weapon to jam even more. If you can manage to keep the bolt from getting dirty then it will work perfectly.

Good product. I had one I carried in my unit for about two years. We had to purchase our own assault rifles at the time. However after a lot of comparison, I sold this weapon and went with the Mini-14. Accuracy and dependability were greater from everything I studied and my own experiences. How many times are you ever gonna need full auto? Hopefully never.

Was a great work rifle, had some issues with the standard gas problems. Length and weight were excellent for carrying and maintaining shooting stance, weak and strong sided. Also, with the Eotech was highly maniplulable with gas mask on. Standard AR-15 rifle, only issues I had after about 20,000 rounds through the years were the standard gas port clogging, and broken extractors. Other than that, this was the one I liked most.
