| Description: | It took some getting used to making the switch from my old Kawasaki Police 1000. One thing is the small foot brake and shift lever. The ride is WAY different, while the KAWASAKI glides more, the BMW is bred of a sport/utility bike and it shows. Though it's an 1150cc bike, it's a twin boxer and that combined with the driveshaft transmission, it's a torque monster. The torque is so severe that it will literally tip the bike over if you rev it too high while it's on the stand. The acceleration is quick, but the Kawasaki 1000 has a much higher Top Speed. |
The nice touches include: heated grips, adjustable wind screen and a seperate battery for emergency equipment. The cons: air/oil cooled (so it generates WAY more neat than a water cooled bike), uncomfortable saddle and seating position for full 8 hour shifts and the almost useless "crash bars". You also get LOTS of compliments and questions while riding this bike. Maybe the "sport bike" aspect makes you more 'approachable' to civilians or perhaps most folks are used to Harleys and Kawasakis.
My motorcop friends at CSPD have these and they love them, they say the ABS helps in pursuits, especially when chasing motorcycles.
great bike for the price
I ride a r1100rt no "p" and love the bike lots of miles on it looking forward to getting a r1200rt someday .
Not sure if this is the bikes our traffic unit has or if it the other, but they are AWESOME bikes!!!
tested this bike for the bmw convention in new orleans during a mini parade and fell in love with this bike. this bike is good due to its water cooled engine and at slow speeds the bike is great. we ride the harley road king and that bike sucks at slow speeds always overheat and cut off.
