I just finished this book and it was a page turner. For anyone who has been in the life, many of the author's experiences will ring true. For those just starting out it will be an interesting tale of the author's experiences with the NYPD, as well as a history lesson about the NYPD's past. The book takes you from Conlon's upbringing in suburban NYC with his FBI Agent father, to his experiences as an rookie patrolman then into Narcotics, the 44 Robbery Squad, and the events to 9.11 (it is not a 9/11 heavy book).

As my score reflects I highly recommend this work to anyone.

A good writer with a flair for storytelling. This is the tale of a Law Enforcement family, something that we can all relate to, and well worth a look. Conlan wrote it like he lived it and he draws you into his (our) world and asks you enjoy the ride............recommended

One of my favorite books! I actually started re-reading it after being assigned to a special missions unit. This book is almost like a parallel to my career. It's so close it's sort of scary.

As a New Yorker..and family to many..I know from a kid I could count on Them! Never one time in my history to tell..did I ever meet a cop who yelled..Patience and expertise was very diverse..So I have to take this as a book of its worth! As a teen there was great cover in being seen..We found a ground of "Just" cause wearing the uniform meant more than Law! It's about who we are....Apache

Excellant book. I read it once before becoming a cop, again while I was a rookie cop, and just started it a third time after ahaving a few years behind me. I give it to every new officer I know and tell them to read it.
