| Description: | From the first game wardens in the Everglades, who had to buy their own uniforms and guns, to present-day wildlife officers, who often fulfill the role of police officers, law enforcement in the wild, untamed Everglades has kept pace with changing times. You’re just as likely to find today’s game warden chasing escaped convicts, keeping surveillance on drug runners, or recovering wreckage from a plane crash as arresting deer, turkey, and alligator poachers. And you’re more likely to encounter game wardens who are female and college educated now too. Gone are the days when game wardens were often former lawbreakers themselves and came by their jobs simply because they knew the Glades so well. Ride along on an airboat as it whooshes through sawgrass marshes. Hitch a ride on a track as it chugs and grumbles over the Glades’ rough terrain. Meet the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting the wildlife and natural resources in the only Everglades on earth. |
I work for the FWC which before 1999 was known as GFC before it was combined with Marine Patrol. This book is a wonderful read and gives real life tales of officers who have to rely on their own insticts and abilities to survive in remote areas where back up is very often a very long way away. Very highly suggested for reading !!!
I too work for FWC and have been trained by some of the men mentioned in this book. There are some stories mentioned in the book that are amazing, and even more so when told by the officer himself. If you want a taste of the Glades, without the mosquito bites, give it a read. The "good old days" may be gone but there are some sure nuff yarns being spun right now in the Glades. The gators are just as wild and the airboats wilder- the role of the Game Warden has changed with time (as all things do), but some facets remain the same. A new chapter may be due soon, Jim!
READ ALL YOU CAN. MOSTLY READ THE BIBLE. ITS GOD'S BOOK FOR MANKIND.
Yes this book really shows how things used to be in old Florida, before it became "civilized". That is what you could call the good old days. However we have a super bunch of FWC officers who will be writing their own book some day soon. Keep up the good work!
Great Book ON the good old days.
GREAT BOOK! Anyone interested in conservation enforcement NEEDS to read this book, you have to be dedicated!
A great read.
