After shooting glocks I wish I had not picked this firearm. I found it less accurate then similar glocks on the range. And after unloading a few clips I got the occasional jam. Never anything that Couldn't be cleared in a single tap and rack. But at least it was only after several clips had been fired. If your dept gives you the option between this and the glock take the glock you'll be happier in the long run.

I rated this weapon this way, because I carried a Smith 5906 for 20yrs and never had a problem until recently, it went from single fire after the first shot to double action all the time and I had to go to another Smith & Wesson which is a 4506-1 and it has given me the same performance as my 59, so I'm sure that this 59 is equal to or better than my old 59.

I don't have this exact gun but I do own the 910s and is looks just like it. I love my gun how it fits on my hand, how light weight it is,how it shoots, no recoil and has real good accuracy. But is only one thing I don't like about it, is it little bulky to conceal. I think my barrel is a little longer than the model 5946. But beside this one thing I love my gun.
I thought the police department stop giving 9mm because it had no stopping power, what is up with this? Especially in NY.

I actually can't rate this weapon because I don't own one. I'm responding to one of the bloggers who mentioned magazine spring fatigue. I had been curious about this myself so I unloaded my
mags and happened to inspect some of the forty caliber rounds and found minute metal bumps
at the top lip of the shell casings which brought to mind a time a few months ago when I was chambering a round before heading off to work when the round became stuck halfway into the chamber. I closely inspected the round and found minute imperfections at the top lip of the shell casing probably due to my chambering the same round every work day for months at a time. I then inspected every round that I had on hand and found that nine out of fifty rounds had enough minute imperfections that I won't load my weapon with them. I'll fire them off at the range. So be careful brothers ( and sisters). As for Smith and Wesson products... My first
weapon as a rookie cop with the Chicago Police Dept. in 1968 was a Smith and Wesson
38 cal. Combat Masterpiece revolver and later when we were allowed to carry a second weapon it was a Smith and Wesson Model 39 auto and both weapons served me well. I
highly recommend any Smith and Wesson product. Thanks

The 9mm is an ineffective round which endangers officers who use it. A .40 or .45 is the weapon which will best protect the officer who protects others.
Use only the weapon you train with, as in an emergency situation you will only rise to your level of training. Your backup weapon should be the same caliber and type as your duty weapon.

I like this gun, the grip fits perfect. I have never had a malfunction while shooting it. The only drawback to this gun is it is very heavy.

It's a durable, reliable and accurate pistol. I have fired over 1000 rounds without cleaning it and it never jammed. It's been exposed to different climates and all weather conditions over the years on daily bases and works as new every time you squeeze a trigger. Fits comfortable in the hand.

Duty pistol I use in service. The metal frame can be a bit heavy in comparison to other firearms featuring a polymer frame (ie, Glock, HK USP, XD, etc) and the accuracy is lower at excess ranges near 25M. However the models featuring DAO and no safety, in conjunction with a high retention holster, can make for an effective weapon. Im very happy with it, but Id rather have the glock.

In response to another review - the weapon isn't the problem or the answer to accuracy, that lies with the handler.

I was given a choice in 1995 to choose between this firearm or a Glock - I chose the S&W initially due to the point of S&W being a USA manufacturer - as a New York City police officer we can tell you that our weapons take a beating - my weapon was pulled out quite often during a tour of duty - especially on car stops assigned to highway. The 5946 took a beating and NEVER malfunctioned - no matter what rounds I used, or if I didn't maintain the weapon for a significant amount of time (usually right before I went to Rodmans neck is when I cleaned it).
It is a heavy weaopn, but well balanced. I highly recommend this firearm for patrol officers!
