In recent discussions many have touched on the fact that dozens of other countries police officers are armed with submachine guns, or even assualt rifle type machine guns such as the MP5, MP7, M4-16 series, AK47 types and so on. If You, the individual officer were given full permission to carry one of these weapons on your person would you choose to do so and what type would it be?

Do keep in mind this is " on your person" meaning it "may" have to replace your current sidearm.

I myself would like to have an MP5 chamberd in .40S&W. I'm not completly sure if H&K ever offered this weapon in a PDW size or not, but that would be my choice.

As far as I am aware of it only came in 2 other calibers and in the full size.. MP5/10 Chambered in 10 mm Auto,
MP5/40: Chambered in .40 S&W. I have never heard of a K series in anything but a 9mm. The UMP is in 9mm .40 cal and .45... My Pick would be the MP7... Small, light weight, 950 RPM, and the 4.6 X 30 mm round.. lol

MP7

*H&K FOREVER*

My department has 3 M-16's fully auto. One per shift. I go to carry the one on my shift by default. I like it.

I wouldn't carry an SMG in lieu of my sidearm, for practicality and portability reasons. That said, I wouldn't mind having either an HK MP5 or a Thompson SMG issued to me as a back-up weapon in case I encountered a situation for which my service pistol was inadequate!

a Colt commando, meaning the 11 and half inch barrel, I'd like that as well. I keep thinking back to seeing the German Polizi with their MP5's and 7's. Those boys DO NOT play around!!

Well I carried a 240B and a M-249 while over there. But I would have to pick an MP5 in .40 S&W! Used it once and fell in love. Lightweight and compact!

H&K MP5-K would be sweet, I understand that Washington State may be carrying these.

MP-5K is cool but a bit short in sight radius. It's good for diplomatic protection but no advantage over a pistol for pentration through body armor or other barriers. I still think a rifle round is a much better option if available for patrol.

Well back when I was an Air Force Security Police I carried an M-16. After I got out of the Air Force I went to work as a Police Officer at an airport, I always thought it would be kind of cool to be able to carry one there too.

Maybe you could work as a German Polizei at an Airport. They were carrying MP-5's years ago......

If I was carrying one as a replacement to my issued sidearm, I would go with either an MP5-PDW, or an MP7...something small.

I am issued am M16A3, but it rarely comes out of the car. My privately owned M4 is used quite a bit for entries, etc...

I carry a select fire m-14 in the car now, but given the choice I would love to have a MP5/10 in 10mm for close quarter work.

I like the Aero mini-gun SUV mount idea, myself. For a sub-gun the MP5 is very controllable and would be a nice addition to a patrol car. M4 is probably even better, considering that recent penetration tests show it is safer in an urban environment from the problem of shoot-through.

Yes, sir ... gotta tell ya, I have shot most of these weapons. Including a Thompson, Navy edition from the 1920's.

But one gun no one has mentioned that I would consider changing out with my current sidearm (which is a Sig 220).

It would be the Glock 18. This is a 'select fire' pistol that can go FA with a flick of the finger. I have shot one of these bad boys and man, they are fun. Might be tough to gualify on one but it is a pocket machine gun. All you need are extra mags and you are 10-8 ...

It will fit in your standard holster. The only clue something is different about this gem is the little dial switch on the slide. It's legit and the one I handled was made in Argentina.
