Has anyone heard about the new Beowolf .50cal M4 varient. It apparently has the stopping power of an antitank rifle. I was wondering what the rest of you think about it.

Do you think if you mounted it on your patrol car it would be showing "Excessive Force"? and not politically correct to boot!

What if you shot someone with it at 50 yards out?

its been around for quite some time now.. at least since 03. Its no where near what most people would think. Its not a .50 BMG cartridge. its much much smaller.. like a .50 AE magnum of sorts. Its popular in the north west for bear and Elk with in 200 yards.

The .50 Beowulf Entry carbine launches (launches cause its a missile) a 325-400 grain half-inch slug downrange at 1900-2000 fps...

here's a view of the round in the mag, it's a 334gr RN, 400gr hollowpoints are on the way

(inside a AR mag) lol

In something the size of an m4, I'd stay with 5.56. .50 is a bit of overkill.

6.8 Remington or 6.5 Grendel may also fit the bill even better.

I've ended up liking the 6.8 SPC. I find it a very nice compromise.

could somebody tell me why it's a high powered assault rifle? Is there a low powered assault rifle.

I was kind of under the impression that all "assault rifles" were relatively low-powered. Maybe I've been misinformed.

first you need to define 'assault rifle', then determine the caliber you think is 'lowpowered'. I have a lever gun that spins a .357 caliber bullet MUCH faster than a pistol; is that considered 'high'? define your terms, then decide the parameters. .50 B is much to aggressive to anything other than engagement over 100 yards. You do not want to miss with a .50 bullet at 2K fps in a house entry. You would dig the bullet out of a house three doors down. bad day.

I suppose anything that is smaller than the .50 Beowulf could be considered low powered.

My line of thinking is to compare "assault rifle" cartridges to common hunting rounds used in bolt guns. For example, the .30-06, .270, .308, etc. The most common cartridges in so-called "assault rifle" platforms are 5.56x45mm and 7.62x39mm, and both are relatively anemic when compared to the aforementioned cartridges. Therefore, I don't consider the "assault rifles" to be high-powered.

My view would not sound so good on the evening news, though.

It's in the range of a .444 marlin or .45-70, no biggy. Believe me, it's not a threat to cops since all the guys I know with one *are* cops.

It's not an assault rifle unless it's selective fire. The press like the term because it scares the citizens in to outlawing ugly guns.  Grandpa's 30-30, for instance, is more powerful than an AK47.

There are semi-auto rifles out there in 7.92X57, (8MM) 30-06, 7MM, 7.62 NATO and they're formidable. I never worried about that as I relied on my training, level of awareness and backup if the brown stuff hit the rotary oscillator. I've always considered armed citizens a resource and armed bad guys as a given in this job. It is what it is.
