Currently in California, it is up to the employing agency if they want to arm School Police Officers. The school district I work for doesnt feel it is necessary to arm there officers since we work in a fairly safe city. What are your comments? Feel free to send the school board your comments if you wish. there website is www.hbuhsd.org

With the events that have occurred with increasing frequency since Columbine and before, it would be extremely foolish not to allow armed police officers in your school. It only takes once for someone disgruntled to bring a weapon in school, and you've taken away the only protection that those kids might have had.

Armed with grenades, bazookas, and anything and everything else you get your hands on.

THAT ... is the way it ought to be. We are police officers, not babysitters. Good for your SRO,s.

All school police officers should be armed, especially in California. The district is opening themselves up for a major liability lawsuit if any officer gets hurt or killed or a student or faculty member. When they put a police officer out in the field without the proper tools it's an tragedy waiting to happen.

Why would a school want unarmed police officers?

Only a retard would be an LEO without a gun. Arm them all, it's not just about how harmless the school is it's also about what might get into the school.

Of course they should be armed, they are police officers, regardless of their assignment.

Our school resource officers are regular patrol officers assigned to the schools. Armed and trained to handle active shooter senarios and school lock-down procedures.

As I recall, most, if not all of the school shootings over the past several years have occurred in "Fairly safe" cities (does Columbine ring a bell?), if you are a certified LEO working in a school, then you should definitely be armed. There are NO SAFE SCHOOLS anymore, the potential for danger and armed confrontation are ever present.

If they are sworn and trained Police Officers with full arrest powers then damn right they should be armed. If not then they are just glorified Security Guards.

Fully armed or give them nerf footballs to protect your child from a killer. I'll take fully armed.

A police officer without a gun is like a firefighter without a hose. If a shooter enters, are you supposed to ask him nicely to stop shooting and hope he does?

Police officers who are assigned to schools should be armed. There isn't one reason why they shouldn't be armed. As others have stated before, it isn't healthy to be an unarmed uniformed police officer.

I'm a SRO in a school where I have arrested students for possessing hand guns, brass knuckles, drugs, knives, clubs, and spiked gloves. If it wasn't for my firearm as a deterrent, then there is no way I would work in a school. The kids surely do not respect the uniform, but they know what a gunshot would do to them. Any agency or school who does not want to arm their officers or security are lacking common sense, and are putting the school and the officers in danger.

Same here as others, officers for the dept are assigned to schools. One of our schools just had a shooting, fortunately no one was actually shot, but they recovered 2 automatics and one handgun, and some knives. There isn't enough money in this world that would make me work in a school without my gun. They're idiots for even thinking it.
