Just want to say hello to my fellow hunters out there. I am an avid hunter, I hunt at home and I also travel to hunt. I teach hunter safety here in NY and I am an NRA firearms instructor.

I try to do a lot of my hunting with the bow. I also enjoy gun hunting a great deal.

I have bear hunt scheduled for this June that I am looking forward to. This will be a gun hunt. I have been on 2 bear bow hunts and after the last one my 45-70 will be with me on all bear hunts.
I was in northern Sak. Canada having a blast bears all over the place. A sow with 3 cubs game along and with all the trees in Canada the cubs pick mine to climb. Well mom saw me and it when down hill from there. They (cubs) got above me and stated screaming and crying. Mom looked up and then she started up the tree. I was able to keep her at bay but poking at her with my bow and yelling. She also stated shaking the tree and made more noises and growls then you could believe. Needless to say I was scared. This was all happening at the end of daylight so it got really scary when it got dark. After about an hour or so the cubs began to climb down the tree. I could literally feel them breathing on my neck. Once they got down it was the biggest relief in my life. I really thought I was going to be found hanging dead in the tree. Luckily it all worked out and I will get to do it all over again.

Mike,
That's what we love about hunting isn't it? :-) I am up in Rome, NY and get to hunt some, but nowhere near as much as I would like. Good luck on your bear hunt and give us an update when you get back. Are you a subscriber to the National Bowhunter magazine? If you are, I have written two articles for them now and have two more that will be published in upcoming issues. If you aren't, you may want to check it out. It's got lots of stories of hunters, by hunters and not as much "this is how you do stuff" stories. And the best part is that it is only $12 a year. Doug Walker is a great guy too. Write up your story of the upcoming hunt and talk about this past one with the cubs and it will surely be a big hit for the rest of us hunters out here. You can find more info at http://www.nationalbowhunter.net/. Be Safe!! --B
