I took and passed the written test and the PAT yesterday for the City PD in my hometown. Next step is an interview with a panel of officers this coming Friday at 9:15. Here's my question......What should I expect? I know I am going to be asked the question "why do you want to be a LEO", but what else should I expect? The interview is only scheduled for 15 minutes, so I know it is going to be short and to the point. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

probably a few questions about your past: drug use, driving history, credit history, employment history. keep your answers short and to the point. dont beat around the bush. remember they are cops, they know when your lieing and grasping for answers. if you cant remember, tell them. be honest! be yourself and look sharp. best of luck!

First of all, congratulations on passing your PAT and written exam! The Oral Board usually asks a few questions to determine your ability to judge a situation as well as a little about your personality. Don't be overwhelmed and keep an open mind. You need to think about how you would respond as a law enforcment officer. Be honest! Dress appropriately and be calm... I know the calm part is hard to do...

Congrats! Now...dress conservatively, business suit preferably. Answer questions directly, look at the panel when you speak to them. If you don't know an answer, say so. Be honest, be truthful. Be prepared to look into your future, future plans, training, education, etc, and where you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years, etc. Try to relax; but theyexpect you to be nervous, so don't worry about it. That 15 minutes will seem to last for hours....

I set on the review boards here at my department and some of the questions we ask are. Why should we hire you over other applicants? Why do you want to go into Law enforcement? What are you long range goals both with our Department and your Law Enforcement career? and some situational questions...You may be ask to tell the board something about yourself, such as hobbies, family, etc. At the end of the interview we will ask if you have any closing comments or questions...Just be honest

Good ones! Those are some of the questions I was asked by the departments I served.

Generally, the board members will have prepared questions that each will ask, such as those pc805 has listed. From your answer you can expect 'spin off' questions. In other words they may ask about your education attainments. That will give you the opportunity to tell them it took you an additional 17 years to get your degree, and why. This gives them a feel for the kind of person you are, and that in spite of many obstacles you attained your degree!

Remember, there is ONLY ONE person in the room who can make them believe you are the best choice.

After this hiring interview you will look forward to promotional interviews where you will know your competition and can prepare accordingly.

Honestly answer their questions, whatever they may be. Be firm but polite, but above all else, be HONEST!! Best of luck to you, and congrats on making it this far. Let us know how it goes, too!

A huge thanks to all of you who responded to my question. I had the interview Friday morning and feel fairly confident that it all went well. Almost all of the questions that y'all posed for me were asked! So, if it wasn't for each of you, I wouldn't have been as prepared as I was!! Now, I am just waiting to receive a phone call from the Captain telling me that I now have an interview with the Chief....OR I will get a letter in the mail telling me I wasn't qualified for the position. Y'all keep your fingers crossed for me!! (and I know I replied to my question....and I am not a cop...but please don't kick me off!! I thought this would be easier than sending all of you a pm).

Don't answer, "why do you wanna be a cop" with "To protect and serve" ...I can't believe people still say it to this day...We ask senerio based questions as well. They are aimed at applicants with little or no expierience, but common sence is required.

Here's my favorite: "You ask for the day off to attend a huge sporting event, say the World Series game 7, but your supervisor doesn't give you the time off, so, you call in sick...While leaving the venue, you see an armed robbery/carjacking in process....How do you handle this situation?"
Think about that for a while...

Also everyone says that they want to be a Police officer so they can help people and make a difference.....hmmmmmmm

but I loved the called in sick question when they asked me. I wasn't expecting it.

Do you think they would've hired us if we said, "Because I like to ruin peoples day by writing as many cites as I can"
