I have been a security officer for about 2 years now and I have just recently been certified to hold a taser…At the location that I work at many of the people have said for a security guard to be holding a taser is too much…I was just woundering if you saw a security officer with a taser would it be okay?

I've seen security guards that are allowed to carry guns.....so what is the big deal with carrying a taser? If you are allowed to carry pepper spray, OC, or a baton...then a taser should be OK too. The problem you have is with people's misconceptions about the taser, but you can't do anything about their ignorance. JMO

In our work...bad things can happen at anytime to anyone wearing a badge. (Security Officers included) ALL should welcome any tools provided to bring in the bad guys safely and without officer injury. WEAR I T WITH PRIDE brother.

Exactly. We can carry a gun, and use it if we have to, but let us deploy a taser and people will go nuts. Especially the campus hippies that some of us have to deal with. Misconceptions are there because people choose to be ignorant on a subject and follow the 'crowd' on opinions. Being 'able to carry' and 'should we carry' are different things. Yes, every member of my campus security department could handle carrying a taser with the proper training, blah blah blah. But the contract company in the next town over (that I worked for many years ago) has the habit of hiring idiots, and from what I've seen and heard nothing has changed. Give them tasers and something dumb will happen. I think that if an individual officer is seen fit to carry, then it would be good. Maybe in AZ it wouldn't cause a big deal, but in my area people would go nuts. Maybe I should move.

It's great to have, I've rarely had to use mine. Corrections and Security, and armed with an x26 at both, only had a few incidents at the jail that I've decided to use my taser for instead of other means to subdue a threat. Remember that the legal recourse brought on by blood sucking lawyers becomes quite the hassle.

Also, be wary of any coworkers that tend to be a little badge heavy [this happens in security just as in law enforcement, unfourtunately. They want to pretend to be cops, to stroke their tiny ego]. They can get your whole staff into hot water with one stupid misuse of the taser, believe me!

I second this....

Congrats on getting certified for the tazer though! Are you able to carry it now?

Well as long as you are just holding it I don't think you are going to hurt yourself. Do you have to buy your own batteries?

I agree and disagree. Security guards tend to be hit or miss. Good guy just trying to make it, or complete moron who wants to be a cop, but isn't good enough.

The good guards understand the taser isn't a toy, and not something to randomly threaten teenagers with, when they don't comply when you give them a direction [As much as I'd love to taser those losers, it just doesn't work that way]. Then there are the idiots, and there are LOTS of them. When I was in high school, I did mall security. I once saw a guard in his upper 20's threaten a 12 year old with handcuffs and OC spray because the kid was sitting on a railing.

Issuing the taser to good guards generally means issuing it to the bad guards as well, unfourtunately [And sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference from a higher up's stand point, who isn't always observing them.]
One bad guard is all it takes to destroy the rest of your department.

At a prior place of employment, [private university to remain nameless] they took away Security carrying {dept approved personally owned} Firearms and replaced them with Tasers....That (among other reasons) caused me to resign.... If it was Only Tasers to start, ok... or if they ADDED Tasers, again ok... but Less Lethal Force should NEVER be considered a replacement for a deadly force option....

I think if your trained then so be it there are many times when a cap stun is just not practicle. I run a security company in New york and we can Carry guns, but not tazer's wich are less- lethal.. Home land security and New york state are trying to change this. So to answer your question I don't have a problem with security officers carrying tazer's i think its a good idea!
