Posted 5 months ago I have a 4yr old daughter and I want to get a German Shephard puppy to grow up around her. But I don't know if they are good around kids. Does anyone have any suggestions on what dog to get her? |

| Posted 5 months ago My brother has a GSD and twins. His dog is very protective of the girls. I know of other people that have given me the same story. I do konw that the GSD is very good with family situations. Training is the key. Just research it before you buy the dog. A very credible breeder is important. |

| Posted 5 months ago If you think a Shepard might out grow the kids, get a Pug Puppy, then when the kids grow a bit bigger, like school age, get the Shepard. It'll work out, because the Shepard will not only have someone to protect, but it will have another older dog to rag on. I grew up with pugs, and they are excellent around children, very small and playful. |

| Posted 4 months ago If you want a good kid/guard dog, the Great Pyranees is the way to go. They are very large, nice temperament and nothing or anyone will get to your kids when threatened. They were bred to guard and need space and a place to run around but they are fantasic. I have a Pyranees/Anatolian shepard mix, see profile pics, and he absolutely loves my 2 yoa grand daughter. He cries when she is not at home and sleeps in front of her door at night. He always sleeps where he can see everything, never in the room or bed, but in the hall. I love that dog, but like I said, he is huge, he was born Halloween 07 and now weighs 85 lbs. but what a sweet heart, oh, they love cats and will guard them too, even if the cat doesn't want them too, lol. |

| Posted 3 months ago I have a lil ten pound Boston Terrier Dachshund mix and she has the best personality ever! She is great with kids. So many little girls have played dress up with her and picked her up and carried her everywhere and made her eat and drink and stay wrapped up in a blanket and not once did she show any aggression. She absolutely loved it! I also have a 10-12 month old German Shepard Lab mix and she has not really been around kids as we moved away from my family so she does not do so well around smaller children. She actually snaps at them if they make sudden movements or turns their back to her. I think with more and more exposure in controlled circumstances she will get more used to them. I think right now she is just scared or jealous of them and is not sure what else to do. |

Be warned a lot of cocker spaniels pee on the floor when they get excited. So does LULUSGT that's why I don't have himover. Police Link Forums Moderator PAIN IS WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODY! Obstacles are what you see when you lose sight of the goal. I'd rather die trying than live as a coward. |

| Posted 3 months ago If you don't have a lot of time to invest in the GSD don't bother. I bought one when my son was young and had to end up getting rid of the dog. While I'm sure he loved my son he played way too rough with him. I'm sure if I would have had the time to invest he would have been fine and propper training as well. |

| Posted 3 months ago My favorite dog for around kids is a Border Collie Just remember all dogs can and will bite !!!! Little kids have a way a pulling hair or just being a little to ruff. I am NOT a cat fan but if the reason you want a dog is to teach your child how to be responsile, you might want t otry a cat first, better for litle girls, and they seen to tolerate being carried around better then a dog. I would really wait until a child is over 10 before getting a dog. After 10 the motor control is more developed and you have less of a chance of a dog bite from an inocent provacation ( not intended ) bite.

| Posted 2 months ago I have a two year old grand daughter that got a pyranees/anatolian shepard mix for the holidays. He is now 9 months old and a hundred pounds. He loves her, is different with her than he is the adults and guards her like she was his goat. I highly recommend a pyranees for those that want a large kid dog. They love your cats, kill coyotes and nobody will come near your family except through them. |

| Posted 2 months ago I think you can get whatever breed you want. Any dog owner who is meticulous about training and socializes their dog can raise a gentle pet. I personally have an American Bulldog that is great with kids and I have friends that own everything from Pit Bulls to Rottweillers that love and protect the children in their homes. TRAIN & SOCIALIZE.... 24/7 |

GSD's are phenominal with children. In my opinion, you could not ask for a better friend and protector. A GSD will guard your daughter's life with his own... even if it means giving his own life up. Don't make the mistake... you want the best? GET A GSD!! |

| Posted 2 months ago I must stick with a Lab, the other little fufu dogs are nice I guess but not only will a lab be gentle, and fun but it is a decent enough size to protect a child when need be. When my dog was going out to the back yard late one night, to conduct his "business" he crouched down in the doorway ears went back teeth came out and that was the frst time I ever saw him that way, he was ready to kill. Some punks had jumped my fence and were walking towards my truck they left quickly. Until that point I didn't think he would be much as a guard dog, my mistake. NO WAY. Cocoa was a chocolate Lab and was the sweetest thing on earth. She loved kids. When she saw kids she would look at me as if to ask to be allowed to go play with them. I had a black Lab that was as sweet as pie around adults and wanted to kill any child under 4 feet. She hated all kids. Hated ducks too. Was the worst hunting dog they ever had they said. | Posted about 1 month ago My GSDs have all been great around kids. The current one jumps up sometimes when he gets excited but that's my fault (training issue) and that's the only problem I've ever had. Please help my Cub Scout son reach his popcorn sales goal.
The $25 military option is available again this year. My son gets 6% of all of his sales put into a college savings plan. |
