Posted 5 months ago I'd say your chances aren't very good. It would be too much of a liability for a force to hire a person already suffering from a mental illness. You hit the nail on the head with the "no one in their right mind would give a crazy person a gun"...not that it makes you crazy, but you understand the basis of the comment. This job is stressful enough without having to deal withe the added burden of a mental illness. LEOs who don't come into this job suffering from depression often will experience mild forms of it because of what we do, what we see, and the shifts that we work. Some experience forms of it that aren't mild. I can't see why you couldn't get a civilian position with a police force though, have you thought of anything related to that you may be interested in? That could give you the satisfaction of working for the good guys without actually being a cop. If you don't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

| Posted 5 months ago The likelyhood of an agency over looking your diagnosis is very remote. The potential civil liability exists, if you are going through a bout with depression during a critical incident. As long as you are taking antipyscchotics you will not be hired, any long term use and medical history will disqualify you from appointment. "Fear is an instinct. Courage is a choice."Rear Admiral Joseph Kernan USN

Posted 5 months ago From a liability stand point someone diagnosed with this disorder and required to take meds for it would be an automatic disqualification at ever department I know of. If you seriously want to help others you might start taking counseling classes and maybe a few Psych courses then take your experiences and training with this type disorder and help others. One of the psychiatrist I had to see after an OIS was a former police officer that met his breaking point in LE, he broke down on a missing child case that ended very badly and he had known the mother, his break down lead him to want to help other cops handle the strong emotions that go on behind the stern exterior that everyone else sees.

| Posted 5 months ago Good idea Odin. CVM you should look into counselling like Odin suggested. It would be a great way to help people and your illness might even help you understand some clients better than the average counsellor could. | Posted 5 months ago It would be a good idea for you to contact your student advisor to see what options that you have. As the other officers here have pointed out, your medical history and medications would preclude you from becoming a candidate. Consider some of the other opportunities to serve with an LE organization since there are many support roles that you help fill based on your education. Be sure to talk to someone from your local agency to see what is available. |

Posted 5 months ago again....this is a very interesting topic for someone making their first post. and the answer is YES! LIFE'S JOURNEY IS NOT TO ARRIVE AT THE GRAVE SAFELY IN A WELL PRESERVED BODY BUT RATHER TO SLIDE IN SIDEWAYS, TOTALLY WORN OUT, SHOUTING "HOLY SHIT....WHAT A RIDE"

Posted 5 months ago The biggest and most prevailent word, LIABILITY. Just as everyone else has said. I hate that for you but definitely slim chances of being hired. I would even say no chance for any position where a sidearm is issued. You might have a better opportunity in corrections or as a detention officer. If you want to be in law enforcement look at different avenues. There is alot more to LE than toting a gun and patroling the streets.

Posted 5 months ago Theres a lot of officers with that right now, but it came after they started their jobs! I love each day like its my last! Why do we are have to be so serious?

Posted 5 months ago Wait, put, it in others words, they have been involved with OIS, death of family and divorces which goes away with time. If this a everyday thing, then maybe you should weigh your options. I love each day like its my last! Why do we are have to be so serious?

Posted 5 months ago Its been said we have to be crazy to do our jobs, but Your situation is different. If you are suffering from depression and anxiety this is the last job you will want. Police officers are dealt some pretty nasty things which always sits on your shoulders when you take it home. Some things just cannot be left at work. I suggest you stay on the treatment and let your doctor give you the go ahead when he thinks you are ready. It may be long but if this is what you want you will tough it out. You have even said you might lose your cool or be unable to back up another officer, would you want to work with someone in this situation?

Posted 5 months ago Hey Everyone, Thank you so much for all your feed back! It confirmed my suspicions, but I definitly will take your advice, opinions, and concerns to heart and make it work for me to better my situation. Maybe I should have added that I have recovered from my episode and are doing alot better, I've been healthier for over a 1.5 years and I still got another 3 years in college. Hopefully I will just get stronger and when I do put in my resume, it will not affect me as much, I can always dream, LOL. Anyways, God Speed to you all and your families. Sincerely, ~CVM~
