My father is a police chief, he has been a cop over 25 years. Recently I have thought about becoming a cop myself because I see what he does on a daily basis and I respect him so much. I am a 22 year old female. But as a female I get intimidated by the thought of being a female police officer. Should I be intimidated?

What is it about being a female PO that intimidates you? In general, I would say that if the thought of being a PO in any way intimidates you, you probably should consider another career.

You need to be strong in this field. Criminals smell fear of any kind. If they think they can control the situation they will control it. Which could go very wrong for you. It is ok to be nervous about the unknown of the job when you 1st start to the academy but if you are still scared half way through then you should think about another job. I am a women and have been LEO for 4 years now. I can be meaner and stricter than most of my counterparts. I work out to stay strong and I remember to not let my mouth put me in a bad postion to get my butt kicked. I tend to use my mind to handle the bad guys vs my body strength. It is a lot to think about but if this is your passion then you will wrap you mind around it and get through it just fine.

If you're already intimidated then you are going to have some problems. Dangerous criminals spot someone who looks scared or weak and they take their shot. If you ask the guys in prison why they did it the common answer is that they knew they could take them because they looked scared, weak or both. It's going to be for you to decide but you have to almost develop an attitude about you and couple that with using fear as your advantage don't let it beat you.

I agree with KSP. Plus you're 22 years old, if the reason you thought about being a Police Officer is because your Father is one, Maybe its not such a good idea. Your father will be proud of you no matter what you decide to do, Just do your best in whatever job you take. If that job is as a Police officer, just make sure it is your decision. Good luck

I think you might be talking about fear. Fear is good and if you listen to your fear it will keep you alive. I have had female partners and supervisors and I have found each to be different in the way they do their jobs. The job is a tough one. The only rules on the job apply to you, the bad guys and nuts don't play by the rules and this makes them very dangerous. Learn your strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps go to a few bars and have a soda to see what the world is all about. Know who you are and understand that your skills are your tools. If you use good tools you will do a good job if you try to wing it you will get hurt. Learn from the academy, love the street and love the job, keep your head small, remember you are not a hero you just respond to heroic events. I have found that my partners think differently and address a problem differently than I did. However, they always got to the same decision that I did. The big problem I have seen is that some females try acting like they are a man. That never works. Be who you are. You will be treated differently not necessarily better or worse. The world is full of different people who have different skills.

We had a female quit the academy after watching this video. On the actual documentary where the people were interviewed and they said she lived because of her will to survive. I said BS she lived because that guy let her live.

I agree with you there, I have said before you can tell when he starts hitting, he wasn't going to stop and if it were not for the little girl screaming daddy please stop he would have killed her.

I think there are as many if not more incidents of male officers being attacked, some killed, some just hurt out there. The danger is real and you got to watch the bad guy. This job is not a cake walk, if you do your job you will get hurt during the 30 years of arresting bad guys.

Well of course there is look how many more male police there are then females so just by the law of averages it's going to be higher.

Read her question instead of stating the obvious, she asked if she should be intimidate, that is not a question that should even come up in my opinion, this is a life or death profession, if she is intimidated by what she knows, she should really fear what she don't know.

She didn't say scared she said intimidated and there is a difference. We all have fear to some extent. and we use it for fuel. But we don't need to be getting intimidated out there or we are useless.

NOPE...you should not be intimidated! If you are intimidated.....just be a supporter of Law Enforcement. Bad guys will pick up on ur intimidation and use it against you......

Male - female . . . we are all targets when we wear the blue and we can only strive to come out on top in any confrontation. As for for being intimidated, I guess that is a fairly large subject and you really haven't expanded much on it. Is it your size? Your age? Have you talked to your dad? Is this your ONE & ONLY post to see who bites? Are your fair dinkum Opal or just another troll? I guess we wait for your 2nd post to judge that. =]

I say if you are in fear, then don't become LE. I'm a female and I am in the hiring process as we speak. I'm not afraid at all to be LE. But I have been riding with PD's for quite a while and have seen stuff go down. You have to be fully aware that stuff is going to happen and you have to be able to hack it. There is nothing wrong with being scared in some situations you will come across but you have got to have that instinct to FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT no matter what! Afterwards, if you want to admit that was one wild ride and you felt like pissing your pants at one point, then fine. But absolutely DO NOT SHOW IT WHEN YOU ARE IN THE THICK OF IT! A criminal is like an animal....they can smell fear and will react to it and before you know it.....you are their prey. I suggest you have a serious "thinkfest" with yourself about is this really the career for you or are you doing it because your dad was one. Then if you want to test your fear, go on some ride alongs. If you don't get scared by what you see, then consider it. But nothing you see on a ride along will compare to you yourself being in the situation as an officer.

I've seen this before and I agree with KSP. The only reason this officer lived is because of this worthless piece of trash's daughter. I still would like to know a little bit more about what intimidates as far as being a female PO.

Intimidated will cause you to drive the other way when your partner is screaming for help! That is unacceptable. Talk with your dad and discuss some of this. Figure out if you are intimidated by trying a new field...or intimidated by the JOB. If you find out that it is the latter, DO NOT sign on. There are plenty of related fields that you can get into.

I am also the daughter of a police chief, and I have been on the job since a month after my 21st birthday. I agree with everyone else, if you are intimidated by being a female officer, then you have no business being on the force, you'll only get yourself or someone else hurt or killed.

You guys love suggesting McDonalds, why not BK or Wendy's?   But seriously if you are intimidated before you even apply it will be really tough for you to the extent that it will be a failing effort before you start.  Watch the video and decide then.

I agree with Tony60.  If you have any sand at all, you'll come back here and either stand up for yourself or explain a little more about what it is you want to know.
