I am trying to decide between a small department(70 patrol) or a large department(500+).  This is a career change for me and I want to make the best choice.   Any feedback would be great.

Okay, are you asking a question?

2 Cor. 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new."

You have a lot of questions to answer for yourself such as salaries, benefits, retirement and disability, cost of living etc.. My advice is seek information through websites to agencies you're interested in or contact the human resources department of those agencies or local, state or federal government.

First of all, 70 is big to me. It depends on what you want to do. I started in a 5 man department. I have had the opportunity to do all of my own investigations. Homicide to a lost puppy.  You get to do and learn things that would take years at a large department. Not much money, but you get way ahead of the curve on experience.

Research, Research, Research- You gotta do some digging. First  find out what you want then where the agency is that comes the closest to providing it. I asked around (to those already serving) and their advice was to find a department large enough to be able to pay for ongoing training, but not so large you get lost in the system. Worked out for me- I work in a department of 33 sworn- good balance, and when I wanted to be an instructor didn't have to wait too long for a position.
