I'm a single LEO, this Oct. I'll be turning 30. I have seen the strain that this job can do to a family, but cant determine if it gets better or worse as a LEO gets more mature (wether professionally or physically). I wondered if some of the marraiges failed because the Officer was married to young or it was the obligations/stresses of the job or just both? Need input.

I think that it certainly helps when you hook up, that she knows what you do, and they way it effects your personal life. That way she kind of has an idea of what to expect.

It has everything to due with your maturity and love and not your age. Being a cop is very tough on a marriage period.

Robocop is right, it is tough ... but possible. I was married already when I became a an LEO. My wife knew I wanted to but she thought after serving as a CO, I had it out of my system. She did NOT  like the idea at all. We prayed about it together and separately. She finally began to see that this is what God called me to do. Now, she accepts it very well for the most part. There are times, like in June of 2004 when we had three officers killed (nearly a fourth) in a shooting. I guess I say all of this to say that old or young, you and her need to commit to make to it work. Of course, nothing is foolproof but if you commit to make it work on this end, it will help. As a minister, when I do premarital counseling, I tell them that commitment is more important than love.

Your right Robocop after 17 years on the job and two wifes it takes work on both sides she has to be very understanding of what you see and do. Plus you have to be VERY VERY understanding of why she sometimes just does'nt fit in to your social circle

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have been married to the same woman for coming up on 36 years this July 22, five children , three boys, two girls , in that order, four grandchildren all boys and a fifth on the way in September. My wife is a Police Officers daughter so she had a head start on the mind set that is needed for a woman to know that when her husband goes out to work , he may never return , or he may return like I did, in the back of an ambulance. I worked for a small department of 21 men and just over 13,000 populous. I was injured while making an arrest , herniating L-4 and L-5 discs in different directions, making surgery impossible. That was in 1984. I regained my ability to do just about everything , but no lifting , jogging , no return to Police Work. Our department contract states , either full duty or no duty, nothing in between. As you can well imagine , this put a great strain on the family life. Many times we both felt like giving up and going our own ways. I was the most irritable Son of a bitch for the first ten years of this retirement. My Wife put up with me during this period of time. She could have walked at any time but did not. IF ITS MENT TO BE , ITS MENT TO BE , BUT BEWARE , MOST WOMEN HAVE A HARD TIME WITH THE STRAIN. YOU MUST LAY IT ALL OUT FOR HER , THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY. AND REMIND HER THAT SHE IS NOT ONLY MARYING YOU BUT YOUR JOB AND YOUR LIFESTYLE. NO POT SMOKING FRIENDS ANY MORE. We went for the first three years of marriage without having children , just to see if we could tolerate each other . That way no children , not much of a problem . You have to make the choice along with her as to weather you are both cut out for the stress of the job. What ever your choice , Best of Luck .

Glory earned on the field of battle , can never be taken away , you take it with you to the grave. Quote by General George Armstrong Custer

Have you heard the old saying don't buy the cow if you get the milk for free? try and find a place to get the milk, because if it does not work you won't still be paying for it.

Hmmmm.... I suppose that is one way to look at it but marriage is a partnership (or should be...). If you can't find someone with who are compatible and who understands your commitment to your job, then don't agree to marriage! Age won't change the way you feel about it and the older you get, the more set in your ways you become. In a true relationship, there should be no ordering around...

Make sure you tell your prospective wife about your job.  Tell her everything she will need to know, so she has little to no questions about it.  Let her know what to expect as far as how stressful and time consuming it can be.  Make sure she knows your committment to doing your duty and that if you get the call, you have to go.  Make sure that she knows that your committment to your duty isn't in competition with your committment to her.  Some people don't understand that there is a difference between the two.  She should respect the fact that you take your duty seriously and that it makes you who you are.  If she can't hack it, or you have any misgivings about getting married, don't do it.  Don't rush into it.

What is this "marriage" of which you speak? It has an evil ring to it!

Age does not matter. If you love the person and think you can't live without him/her then get married.

I waited to get married but my marriage to another cop broke up anyway...My son is joining. I told him to wait a couple yrs and get whatever he has to get out of his system out....I pary to God I raised him with the morals it takes to make a marriage last and not give in to the women that throw themselves at him...As a female officer I have seen the lengths women go to...Walking up on them at traffic stops as they unbutton their shirt, etc...I would just laugh say wrong gender lady button your shirt and what could have been a warning ticket turned into a definite ticket...LOL and I hated writing tickets.. There are a lot of temptations thrown at guys. I used to ask the rookies I trained if they were married, seeing someone or whatever chances are they wouldn't be in a couple yrs...Only one guy proved me wrong. I only trained about 6 because I ended up retiring,,One I fired for being a moron in a uniform, the rest ended up divorced or broken up with their girlfriend except for my one favorite recruit. He has since quit the job and moved on...Sorry guys its not the commitment to duty that breaks up the marriages it is the cheating...And female officers do it just as much so I'm not coming down on only guys here. I just wasn't brought up that way...

Stay single.

Some women can't handle being married to a police officer. Ask my ex-wife about it.

Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil.
