One of my memorable experiences with the IPA was that of being host to families from other countries. When I was with Region 5 in NY we had the opportunity  to host guests from: Great Britain (3x) ; Ireland (2x) and Denmark (1x). The family from Denmark did not speak English .....we managed for a week with no problems. We have stayed in contact with some of these families. We were invited to the Denmark couples' daughter's wedding. This is only one great experience that this organization offers its members.

I haven't had the pleasure to host.  We had a copper from Iceland and another from Australia in town to visit the area but they stayed with other members.   Not a lot of visitors in our area so we don't get much opportunity.

We hosted an Officer from Switzerland, she was driving from west coast to the east coast, and stopped and stayed at our home for a few days, great experience, had a lot of fun.  We got some neat informaion about Switzerland, and what Police work is like there.

Sounds as if you had a very rewarding experiance, despite the language barrier. I've never done this before but would host someone if I had the opportunity.

I have found that their is not a langage barrier, if there is one it us in the USA, alot of the officers from other countries speak their language, English, and maybe one to two other languages.   Swiss officers I have had contact with speak German, French, italian and English.  We sometimes have a problem with English.  Normally there will be no language barrier with hosting an Officer from another country.

Better yet contact the IPA in another country you would like to visit, and you will most likely find an invitation to stay at an officers home, and maybe even go out join them at work.   There are a lot of Officers who would really like to see the USA.  You could be the one to make it one of the best experiences of their life.

We'll be hosting a German officer from August 31st to September 3rd. I'm in the process of arranging ride-along, meeting with SWAT and a visit to our academy. I'm very much looking forward to this opportunity. When I visitied the German police last year, they put a terrific program together for the two days I was at their local district office. All the meetings we had exceeded their alotted timeframe, because there was such great interest in exchanging stories, experiences and tactics.

I think that's one thing that hosting in smaller areas can highlight. Everyone wants to go to NYC, LA, Las Vegas, Chicago, etc but can't always do a ride-along there. I know that the 10+ people I have hosted in Columbus, Ohio really enjoyed the 'America Police Experience' here. I was able to have them ride active shifts with me, do the helicopter, see K9, SWAT, etc...something that they might not get in the other cities - and we're not exactly small with over 1.6 million metro population and 800,000 in the city. So sharing that can be a highlight of a place that might not be the first thing they think of...IE: no one thinks of Columbus when they hear Ohio - it's always Cincinnati or Cleveland and we're bigger then both   Darn football teams!
