Hello , I would love to take Krav Maga but I don't have a school in my town or any town close by. Any suggestions? Anyone familiar with the DVD sets from Levine's krav maga, Aizik comando krav maga, or Kanarek's Haganah? Will it help me to grasp the information. I have a black belt already, have been teaching martial arts and self defense off and on for 11 years and I am a defensive tactics instructor with my department. I think , from what I've seen, the battle and special ops tested techniques of the Isreali systems should be a part of all Law enforcement training. Please I'm looking for guidance and would like some input. God BLess, Ice

The best thing about Krav Maga is that it is based on practical, proven, real-life combat situations.  It is not about fluff and sparring, it is about defending yourself by taking the fight to the agressor and stopping the threat with any means possible.  That being said, because it is based on practical situations, the movements are fairly common sense, easy to learn and have a fairly memory retention rate after just a few moments of training.

Taking a Krav Maga lesson is like the ultimate workout because when "fighting" with your partner, you are expected to assault and defend at an almost all out rate and when pads are used, you are indeed expected to be going all out.  After several minutes of this, you will feel as if you really were in an actual fight.

The obvious best way to learn Krav Maga is to take lessons and train with a partner, but my son who has been taking Krav Maga with me, is an intense athlete with previous experience as a wrestler and training in Judo; I bought him a Krav Maga book from our studio and he took that book to task.  Using his past experience including present Krav Maga training, he got a buddy to help with the skills and movements in the book; he was able to fairly accurately and successfully duplicate the information.

I think with your years of martial art experience, the DVD set would be an acceptable way for you to begin to learn Krav Maga until such a time that you would be able to find a school or perhaps attend a Krav Maga seminar.  Hopefully you can find someone to partner with that is willing to let you "beat up" on.

Something else you might be interested in.  Krav Maga offers an instructors course that is law enforecement only.  This course does not make you a full-fledged Krav Maga instructor; it is only so you can "officially" train LEOs with Krav Maga skills that apply to the LEO environment.

In response to how and where I train; I have been training at the National Krav Maga center in Los Angeles which is over an hour away for me to drive to.  Fortunately, I found a co-worker who also trains in Krav Maga and his school is much closer than mine so I will be switching to the Corona, California school within the next month or so.

Hope this helps.

Krav Maga is hard to find in the states. it is even harder to find someone who is full fledged trained in it as well, hence the lack of schools. I agree with everything "airborne" medic says about it. good luck trying to find a place though. dvd's are good but nothing says training like the hands on.

There is a training center in the Portland, Oregon, area: www.kravmagaportland.com.  I've been going there for about 3 months now... it's a good school and two of the instructors have been in, or are currently in, law enforcement.  It's a great place to train!

I am not currently training in Krav Maga but would love to. There are no centers close to my house and I would have to drive about an hour as "AirborneMedic" does.

However, I have spent alot of time reading about it and have gotten approval for our department to switch to it. We are sending someone out of state to a LE instructor's course in October and then we are talking with Kra Maga to host a LE instructor couse at our department in March 2009. I can't wait!
