I'm curious how it is determined which vehicles police departments use on a regular basis. I assume they have to be American made and large, but other than that, what requirements are there, if any? I have always wondered why it seems to be Crown Vics, Chevy Impalas, and more recently Dodge Chargers.

$$$Budget$$$  Many of the cars purchased are picked because they are on a State contract. Car companies will compete to have their cars listed on the State contract with a set price. These cars meet certain specifications proposed by the State and the car company makes an offer of what they will sell the car for. If selected, the contract price is available to government agencies within that state. If the contract vehicle is undesireable, then the agency can purchase any other vehicle at normal everyday prices. For instance, if this year's standard police cruiser on State contract is a Chevrolet Impala and your department doesn't like that car, the department can purchase a Ford Crown Victoria at the regular market value as anyone else could do. Did that answer your question?

All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, then it may be a troll doing an impression of a duck.

And after all the budget considerations, well....it's which one the Chief likes best.

Umm....is there any departments using anything other than the Big Three???

if so, please post some pictures or links to those vehicles. That would be interesting to see.

If there are any using a different type of vehicle it is because they are very small and only have one or two vehicles or they are large enough to buy or seize a vehicle that they are using as a PR tool. The "Big Three" are the ones that are building vehicles that have or are equipped with what is known as a Police Package. That entails a tuned and stronger suspension, pre-wired for emergency equipment, dual batteries, extra oil and tranny cooler, heavier brakes, larger radiator, and even more HP. A new Company is trying to stat up that has a purpose built police unit that is fantastic and if they can get it out there, we may soon see this as the police unit of the future.

Wow! That Carbon motors police car is awesome!! I would definitely rather drive one of those than a Crown Vic if I was a police officer.

The Chief Det's and Supervisors have Imps.  The patrol units have the CV's.    Thats just the way the Chief likes it.    Another Chief may do all Dodges.
