I just recently graduated from CRTC of Missouri & my institution has a building with dogs in it at the east end of the parking lot... I have noted them barking every morning & trophies in the case in the administration building. I'm curious to see if any other Corrections Facilities have K-9 units within them.

They are prob the same thing Texas uses them for Tracking Escaped Convicts. When a Turd gets rabbit in their blood saddle up boys and turn the dogs loose.

I'm a city k-9 police officer. The parish in which i live in does have k-9 units for the parish jail. However, any time they need the prison searched for narcotics, they always call my partner and i in so that we can run our dogs instead of theirs. Don't ask me why because i'm curious myself. But they do have blood hounds as well that they constantly train with for tracking purposes.

Last night on 1st shift (11-7am) I stumbled upon a sergeant talking about our dogs. They are for escape detail & prison dog trials. Mostly bloodhounds but, the rumor is we do have a beagle. I also found out that I am related to this sergeant too. Its a small world out there!

We don't use dogs at the House of Correction that I'm currently at, but when I worked for the NCDOC we had tracking dogs and drug dogs. I heard an excerpt and an interview a while back on NPR about Connecticut DOC using dogs for cell extractions. They talked to the DOC and then interviewed the whiney @ss public officials who thought it was "cruel" because the inmates were already locked up, why did a dog need to be introduced to help control behavior? Sometimes I wish these people would spend one shift in a seg unit.....it may change their tune a bit.

I hear you about the librals worrying about the poor inmates getting bit by the dogs, would rather take a chance of an officer getting hurt when we all go in on an extraction. Funny thing about it is, usually if we brought the dog on the run and the inmate thought we were going to send the dog in, that would be enough of a deterent for most to comply with the orders.

PA has a K-9 unit. there are 3 dogs, I think, and they travel from facility to facility within the state. I had the opportunity to work with a team when I was assigned tot he Search Team. We ran the dog through the prison and then out to the parking area to search visitor vehicles. It was very interesting to watch the dog and trainer work together.

We have a state and federal prison in our jd, both have K9 units. They use our tracking hounds, but they have their own "patrol" dogs at the facilities.

There is a prison in Maryland that breed there own Black Lab (Chyanne) (k-9). This was to save the prison money on buying k-9's. The prison also donated two to the local departments in the area. This prison was the first to do this. The pup's were to be rasied in the prison so they are used to sounds in the prison, walking on the floors, doors closing......etc. I had one K-9 that came back from that prison due to the fact she did not like the floors. I worked with her for about 3 months and she is now at a department in NC. I think it is a great idea that this priosn had. When I find the story I will post it.

Arizona facilities often times use a variety of canine units to include: German Shepherds, Malonios (sp?), Bloodhounds, and on occasion a Blue Heeler.

In Georgia at GDCP, and the Jackson Super High Max witch are bolth on the same property in Jackson GA. has a huge K-9 team witch consist of 10 hounds and 6 german shepards.... When I worked there the Shepards were all I saw used mostly for shakedowns, and to assist local Law Enforcement in tracking and searching vehicles buildings so forth and so on. There is alot f small towns around that like to use the dogs.... Just for kicks Our Inmate Fire Dept also responded off prison grounds to assist in fires, and car wrecks....

Passiac Sherriffs Deartment in NJ had them in the jail for years as did the Bergen County Sheriffs Department in NJ. NJDOC has had a K-9 Unit for years. All use Narcotics and Patrol Dogs (officer safety, tracking). The reduction of officer injury was reduced with the inception of K-9 in the County Jails.
