So due to the fact that I'm currently a Courtesy Officer for an apartment complex off campus, I'm getting the boot because they claim a local officer can better respond to their needs when I'm on duty. (As I cannot often respond because I'm on shift.)

I did get offered a spot at an apartment complex that is on campus. I know, it's living with the students I protect. The two previous courtesy officers moved out to their own homes and i have decided to take this.

I already know the answer to this, but since I don't want to pay rent this is probably the only option I have for the moment. So any pointers????

It seems a bit to close for me.  If you arrest someone on campus that lives in your apartment complex there is a high probability for retaliation toward you and your personal vehicle.

Yeah, I have thought about that, and also have run the risk of having my vehicle vandalized at my local complex, as I already do courtesy officer work.  It's an older vehicle and I have insurance, so I'm not very concerned......I still need to get a locking gas cover. Thanks for the reply. I have taken that into consideration, but the rewards(free rent and some utilities) are still better than the risk. It's also a much larger place, with an extra bathroom.

I patrol a decomissioned air force base, turned college campus. There is a push to get us free housing there in old base houses. If that's possible, I may be moving there soon, but in the meantime, I have a short amount of time to get out of here.

BTDT, Just make sure you are as professional as you can be at all times, one of the draw backs is they will see how you conduct yourself off duty, so don't "party" at home, it is said we are on duty 24/7, but when you live next door to the people you police, that becomes a big truism. Treat your arrestee's as family and you will do just fine.

Since, my post seems to be very unambiguous, I would like to point out the fact that I'm a sworn law enforcement officer who works for a college. I lived off campus in an apartment complex, where I worked OFF-DUTY as a side job as a Courtesy Officer. There is a similar side job on campus. I was just trying to get different points of view on living in my patrol area, versus outside my patrol area.

IMHO, I would bite the bullet and just get an apartment and pay rent just for the simple fact of avoiding any potential problems with your neighbors turning into a$$hats for any action you may have to take against them while working your second job.  Not to mention that your conduct with be under the microscope by those you may potentially have to deal with for one issue or another.  Is it worth the potential headaches that are going to come up?Just my two cents. Stay safe out there.
