Why is it so hard to find a law enforcement job in Indiana?

Posted 2 months ago It seems that everywhere I go in Indiana, you have to know someone to get the job. I am in theprocess of becoming a reserve officer but I really want to be full time. Someone told me at our last meeting that the Sheriff doesn't like to hire off of the reserves. I don't know if thats true or not but if it is true, it's not fair. I have always wanted to be a cop and serve the community. I have a clean record, not even any tickets. No, I haven't been to college but I am a pretty smart guy. I just wish someone would give the reserves, who are interested in working full time, a chance. Does anyone else feel the same? |

| Posted 2 months ago I was a reserve for 4 years before I became full time. Did the sheriff himself tell you that he does not want to hire from the reserves? If you become a reserve and put your time in without whinning. I asure you that your will get your chance. Don't get in a hurry. All I wanted to be was a full time officer so I became a reserve first. then I gained the trust of all the officers. I did not complain about the transports and all the shit calls that were given to reserves and when the time came, I was able to hit the road without any concern from the sheriff or any doubt from the full time officers. Politics in small town Indiana are a fact of life. If you are an outsider then work hard to become a part of the circle. If you dont want to do that, Then I suggest you try a big city, ISP, or maybe Excise. The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we are, but in what direction are we moving. | Posted 2 months ago I plan on working very hard. I am going to put in more than the 16 hours required. The sheriff didn't say that but I think that is the general consenses. I know the sheriff is a good fair man and I don't think he would do that. I love Monroe County and I really want to work for the sheriffs department. I am trying not to get in a hurry but I can't help it. All I have ever wanted to be is a police officer....... |

| Posted 2 months ago I know a couple of deputies down there. Last I spoke to them they were in the belief that good changes were coming. The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we are, but in what direction are we moving. Oliver Wendell Holmes |

| Posted 2 months ago The sheriff took over the auxillary police and renamed it the monroe county sheriff reserve. Hopefully this take over will bring good changes.... |

| Posted 2 months ago All I can say is bide your time. Here in Missouri there are plenty of LEO jobs, yet so few apllicants. The department I have worked at for the last 2 years has not been fully staffed for the time I have worked here. We have 3-6 openings most of the time. We will be having minimum of 6 spots open in the next 4 months (currently we have somewhere around 3 of those open already). Our FTOs are loaded most of the time if we can find qualified applicants. We have applicants coming from as far as Colorado, Kansas, and Florida..... Will PL please appreciate the LEO for a change? |

| Posted 2 months ago Andrew, you may be hearing third hand information. And that sounds a whole lot like rumor. Listen, if you are truly desirous of a LEO career, go sit down and talk with the Sheriff or who ever. These guys are not gods. They are people who should be approachable, open and communicative. Don't treat them like they are untouchable. Go have a face to face meeting. This will also provide a good measure as to how passionate you are about the job. | Posted 2 months ago Take your time, and become a Reserve and get some experience. I was a Jail Officer and a Reserve for three years before I got my first fullltime LEO position. Before that I had applied to the Indiana DNR (1), Indiana State Police (3), Decatur PD (1) and the Adams Co. SD (3). So just get that Reserve position and learn, and the fulltime job will come. Mac |

| Posted 2 months ago I wanted to be a jailer in Monreo County and do the reserves but they won't let us. They say we can't hold two badges at one time....... |

| Posted 2 months ago I lived in Indiana for 6 months when I was first married. I applied at a number of agencies....they gladly accepted my out of state application fee, but only 1 department ever called me back. I fit all the criteria for the places I applied, and when I called them back, most of them hung up on me. I showed up for a written test in Porter County and was told to sit in the back of the room of the FOP hall, and took the test there. I couldn't see the video screen where they were conducting the memory recall test, and when I complained - I was told I could either finish the test as is, or leave.
If you've ever seen the movie HOOSIERS....I felt exactly like Coach Norman Dale....an outsider who was not given a fair chance. My opinion of Indiana has been jaded by this experience, and quite honestly.....I have never had a desire to go back or spend one red cent of my hard-earned money on anything relating to or resembling Indiana.....
The Dyer Police Department in Northwest Indiana was the only professional department I encountered. They gave me a fair shot, and I made it far up the list, but I wound up moving back to Wisconsin out of frustration as well. FYI....the departments I applied to were : LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF, PORTER COUNTY SHERIFF, SCHERERVILLE POLICE, HOBART POLICE, MERRILLVILLE POLICE, CROWN POINT POLICE. | Posted 2 months ago Come to Southern Nevada. We have plenty of police vacancies and the pay is probably better. |

| Posted 2 months ago Keto, Please don't hold that area against the rest of us in Indiana. They are good departments, but things run a little different in "The Region" as they call it. My roomate at the academy was from "The Region" and just listening to him talk about the way things work up there made me wonder about working in that area. Mac |
