Doing Away With Security Officers (LOCKED)

May 11, 2008.
I am a security guard.
I thought this was a non-LEO forum first of all but mainly; this is in response to the thread:
"Should we just do away with Security Guards? (SG'S GOT PUNKED,)"
Which I have pasted below in addition to a comment from site member, DFrost.
Thank you DFrost.
I doubt there are enough off-duty LEO's to cover the people and property to be watched over. Unfortunately most of ( if not all, ) of the world is about money and as it has been pointed out in the forum, the large majority of property owners will not spend the money for an LEO to man a security detail and many police departments do not allow their officers to moonlight.
I support what DFrost has noted in that many security guards take their profession as just that; a profession. They/we/I take it seriously.
The 60-year-old security guard that was shot and killed about one month ago here in Los Angeles while working at an auto parts store is no less dead than if he had been a sworn officer. Security guards take a job to protect people and property, as does a sworn officer.
When you consider the billions; yes; billions of dollars of loss from theft and liability law-suits that are prevented by just the mere presence of a security guard; I would say security guards are under-paid.
How many sexual assaults have been prevented at shopping mall parking areas by just the mere presence of a 7-dollar per-hour security guard? In just one instance; a woman and her family have been spared the grief of dealing with such a crime; a liability lawsuit against the property owner has been averted and many, many hours of police work have been saved for other crime fighting and investigation.
Quality of work.
In any profession, the quality, skills and training of the individual will vary greatly. There are individuals that perform at high levels and those that perform at low levels. There are police officers that save babies form burning buildings and there are police officers that deal drugs, commit murder for hire and have sex with cows (allegedly of coarse, )
A human being is unfortunately just that and no matter the job we choose to do; we will all have different levels of morals, commitment and expertise.
Anyway; I take my job seriously and I continually train and study to do it better each day. At 50 years of age; I am on my 3rd career. The other 2 skills I have; pay me 2-3 times the money I make as a guard but I am guard because I want to be; because I hate bad guys and thieves; not because I love money.
When I put on my weapon and go to work; I have obviously decided that my life is worth $XX.00 per hour. I like my life and realize that I could lose it when I clock in that day. Take our jobs seriously? I'd say that is pretty serious. I do what I do because I like it and I like to protect my employer and what my employer has worked very hard to own. Things that other scum-bag Pieces OS would rather take the time and energy to figure out how to steal, than to take that time and energy in getting money like all honest people get theirs and that is by working for it.
This is my profession and I try to be a professional and prevent crime by showing a presence, staying aware and being observant. The information and video surveillance data that we gather is available to law enforcement agencies to aid in police investigations of crimes.
I respect and support all police officers and as a citizen, I mourn their loss at EOW.
I have to go to work now. I only gave it %100 last shift so I am a little behind.
Work safely and be ready. It comes from nowhere at any time and it happens really, really fast.

| Posted about 1 month ago Dude, let this one go. Police do their job and Security does theirs. It is like trying to compare screwdrivers and hammers. They both build but in differant ways. For the sake of peace and tranquility let this die. There is a reason the thread you quote was locked. |

I really don’t think I can handle another one of these.
