I had a convo. today about civilains and guns. I am torn between thinking everybody who carrys should be required to take some training. Or that anybody who is non criminal should be able to carry with out anybody knowing. So I am curious as to what a house of second amendment folks has to say about required training.

Amen and BUMP

Up here we used to have to get CCW to carry concealed, but anyone could open carry (unless felony etc...), in order to get the permit, you had to take a 2 day safety course. I think it should be strongly encouraged (safety course) but not required. Moot point now anyway, no permit now to carry concealed in AK :)

Hell, around here having a gun holstered, even in plain view, is considered concealed and is a no-no.

This is some funny shit!

Citizens don't need guns! It's wrong to use physical force against a poor oppressed criminal! How dare you think your family is more important than somebody who allegedly wants to kill you for money! They have to eat and buy LCD tv's too you know! Clearly politicians know what's best for you!

I have mixed emotions about this issue, with logical arguments BOTH directions.

The Citizen in me says that gun ownership is a SACRED Right that should NOT be interferred with. That is based upon both Constitutionally declared documentation and the God given Right to protect myself, others and that which I hold dear.

The Professional in me says that while ownership should NOT be controlled, everyone should have basic firearms safety knowledge with additional training required for those that would carry weapons. It is equally important for citizens to know when NOT to shoot as much as how to do so safely.

That doesn't even begin to approach the whole keeping firearms secure from ALL unauthorized users...especially children!.

That is the dilemia in which I find myself. A 5 year old boy shot his sister because daddy removed the mag. but not the chambered round. I guess I am just torn.

I'm torn between both sides of the arguement. I believe gun ownership is a sacred right and should never be infringed (as long as non-felon/insane/traitor/etc.). I also believe that any responsible gun-owner should get some PROFESSIONAL firearms training too teach basic firearms handling skills, tactics, CCW laws, etc.

While I agreee that the right shall not be infringed, it is the duty of an intelligent gun owner to educate themselves in safe and proper use of firearms.  So how do we encourage training without making it mandatory?  There would be less bad guys if all that carry guns could attend Gunsite, Chapman Academy, Thunder Ranch, or a similar training course.  Heck, I wish I could afford to go!!  I am thankful that my dept has great firearms instructors and that our sheriff supports their training.  While paintball is available to civilians, it comes nowhere close to the Simunitions scenarios we run.  And many civilian ranges do not allow draw-and-fire exercises, which are extremely important to proficiencey in self defense.  Infact, the Mo Conservation Range in my area will throw you off the range if you shoot double-taps because they call it "rapid fire", which they do not allow.  Makes it tough for civilians to get training or practice without buying into a gun club and getting private instruction.  Any suggestions on making training more available without prohibitive costs or trampling the citizens' rights?

I'm glad to have any patriotic American armed, concealed or otherwise but with proper training so that I'm not killed by someone trying to help me.

I respectfully request Nikk and Henry be brought back as moderators please.

I do agree that anyone who wants to carry any concealed weapon should train as much as they can. I recently moved to Michigan and I go to a private tactical fire course. The difference  between a rookie shooter, and someone who's been thoroughly trained [and shoots on a regular basis] is absolutely astounding to see first-hand.

A few headcam videos of the shooting range I go to, just for fun.

These were actually done just the other day, while I stood nervously in the background awaiting my turn, being the rookie of the bunch with a group of lifelong shooters...

I completely agree that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, but I also feel that it is a citizen’s duty to educate themselves on the proper usage of such arms. I would love to get more training with my firearms, it’s just the rarity of such courses and also the cost associated with them that often prevents people from taking them. If they would open more training facilities that can be readily accessed by citizens, then I believe that it would make things a lot better, because practice makes perfect. The more practice and training you have the better off you are.

We were all trained in the proper use & care of our firearms.  We were given a set of rules to follow.  If a civilian wants to have a firearm, he/she should have some basic marksmanship (or markspersonship, for the PC crowd) training, knowledge of the firearms laws of their jurisdiction and the laws of justification of the use of deadly physical force.  I do not think this would infringe on a persons "Right to Bear Arms," it would only make tem more knowledgeable, be more skilled and a safer person with the responsibility of firearm ownership.
