Many Security Officers have stated that they serve the public while performing their regular duties. I thought I would start a thread where these folks could tell us their stories about when they were able to be of service.

Its pretty simple for me. When I worked contract, we served the public by giving them basic protection while they were visiting (or living) on our sites. The rest of it is courtesy. Directions, assisting elderly or handicapped individuals, or just giving peace of mind with our presence. SG's public services are so much simpler than LEO's, lol.

Here at the college, which is a private campus, we have more varied responsibilities, but we don't do public service as much. We'll assist off-campus citizens when they ask for help, or when they visit for special events, but we mainly work with the campus population. We've done medical assists (we're all trained Emergency First Responders), recovered stolen vehicles, and burglary to vehicle calls for the public who are on campus or who live against the campus, but they are always minor incdents that we just hold onto until the police or EMS are available. Its a courtesy that we provide for our very busy and understaffed PD. If they're on a shots fired or burglary call (like, ALL the time), they just ask us to keep the area secured until they arrive. Its a cakewalk and gets us away from the normal BS we usually deal with, lol.

This is some funny shit!

Oh by the way hate to bring up the subject of 911 but I am not sure of the number but there were a lot of Private Security Officers who remained on their posts assisting people out of the towers before they collapsed and died as well.

I can honestly say that the service aspect of Law Enforcement and Security Enfrcement is my favorite part ,and the one thing I really miss now being in Corrections. I have assisted with first aid, locating missing children, giving directions.... from the simple to the interesiting - assisting with disturbances, keeping civilians away from a potential fire fight. I even helped in foot pursuits. Some times we spend so much time focusing on the protect we forget about the serve. You want to make a lasting impression with your career:

 FOCUS ON THE SERVE

BUT ALWAYS BE PREPARED AND READY FOR THE PROTECT.

I didn't do it, nobody saw me, can't prove nothin'

I believe there were 33 security personnel killed in the WTC attack alone.  I am not sure about the Pentagon.  Here is a link to some pretty eye opening stats relating to the line of duty deaths of security officers.  The report states that there are more security officers killed each year than public police officers.  It appears to have been reported in 2004, so I would be curious to know what the numbers are to date....
