An off-duty police officer was dragged from his blazing car after he was the victim of a suspected bomb attack.

The man received leg injuries in the explosion at around 9pm in the village of Spamount, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland on Monday.

Dissident republicans opposed to the peace process have been active in the west Tyrone area in the past.

There have been two attempts to shoot policemen in the last year, in Dungannon, Tyrone, and Londonderry.

PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde condemned the bombing, saying: "This was another attack by a group trying to unravel everything that has been achieved. They have not defeated the police service for the last 38 years and if they seriously think this sort of event is going to defeat the PSNI they are badly mistaken.

They are out of date, out of time, and they are lashing out at an easy target, an easy target which will give them some sort of publicity."

Local representative Derek Hussey said: "I would certainly hope that this isn't starting up again. I would praise the man who, at risk to himself, took the victim from the car."

Army technical officers were called to the scene and there will be a forensic examination.

Earlier this year, police carried out extensive searches across the province linked to renegade republicans.

Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward said: "The contrast between the PSNI officer, dedicated to serving the community, and those with no politics, no support and no principles, who carried out this cowardly attack could not be clearer."

It's ironic that I recently posted on another thread where a police officer was gloryfying a drink sold at a pub in Washington D.C. during Police Week  ......... the name of the drink was IRISH CAR BOMB

Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has warned there is a continuing threat from dissident republicans.

It comes after dissident republicans were blamed for a booby-trap car-bomb attack on an off-duty policeman in Co Tyrone.

The officer sustained serious, but not life-threatening, leg injuries in the attack in Spamount village, near Castlederg, just before 9pm last night.

His car went on fire a short time after the officer was dragged from it by a member of the public.

Mr McGuinness appealed for anyone with information about the attack to assist the police.

A local Ulster Unionist Assembly member, Derek Hussey, praised a local person who opened the door of the burning vehicle and brought the injured man to safety.

In its most recent report on paramilitary organisations, the Independent Monitoring Commission warned that dissident republicans continue to pose a serious threat.

The investigation under way after last night's attack will work on the basis that it was the work of a dissident republican group.

Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward has said those responsible have no politics, no support and no principles.

PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde also condemned the attack and said he was confident the perpetrators would be caught.

He added that the threat from dissident republicans remained high, and that they were more dangerous because they were 'entering the endgame'.

The Sinn Féin MP for the area, Pat Doherty, said the bombing was an outrage to be absolutely condemned. Those responsible had no popular support, he added.

Late last year dissident groups shot two policemen in Derry city and Co Tyrone.

The officer has severe leg injuries and is still in hospital.

It is believed he was targeted by the IRA because of his religion.....he is a Catholic.

Regrettable to hear of this incident. Hope that the officer continues to recover despite the seriousness of his injures. May God place His healing hands upon him!

This officer has my prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

I have been doing research of this area due to my family migrating to the States from Scotland by way of Ireland in the 1700's. This has been an on going problem since the 1600's. I agree with Stgeorgecop, when is it going to end.

Stgeorge I will hold you and the rest of the cops there who are in a difficult situation in my prayers. To place Police Officers into a political battle is bad for everyone. I hope the officer makes a full recovery and returns to the areas as a sign of strength and commitment to the law abiding citizens.

I hope the Officer is going to be okay. Is there any word on his recovery yet? My prayers go out to him and his family and for quick justice to the cowards who did this.

The officer left hospital last week.....despite the pain he wanted to walk out on crutches....he did just that. He is expected, over time, to make a full recovery and to return to duty.

I guess that you can't keep a good man down.
