Folks I have a Chevy Impala with a K9 insert.  My problem is I can not keep my long guns upfront in the passenger compartment where I can grab one as I exit the car.  Unless I lay them on the passenger side seat then the are visable and tempting to thugs who walk by and see an M4 and Shotgun laying in a seat.

I am wondering has anyone seen or made a rack that will mount on top of my K9 insert that will allow me to secure the long guns on top of the insert, so they are out of sight but accessable from the drivers seat?

Any ideas?

Thanks

We use an undercover rack for the shotgun. It mounts on the roof. The rifle is in the trunk. Our canine units with patrol dogs have full containers in the back, with bailout system on passenger rear door.

OK thanks,  since my car is a few years old they wont provide a rack for it, all the new cars have them.   But our new K9 vechiles are also Chev Tahoes with a lot of room.  My car has a full size K9 insert in it also.

I will see what I can locate for the undercover cars.

They have setups that you can have a locked mount near your dash area, but if you have a computer or other equipment in the area it may not work.  Impalas aren't the best car for a K-9 unit.  I have a CV but keep my stuff in the trunk.  I'm pretty sure they make mounts that you can put on the top of your cage.  The same system that mounts to the top of prisoner cages.

I have a chevy impala with a full K-9 kennel also... and I have a hard time finding room for my bag, computer, and everything else... they had to take the shotgun rack out when they put the kennel in... so I am stuck with the long guns on the trunk... Impala's are horrible for K-9... but I'll be driving it till I get my 3rd dog I am sure!  LOL   :)

Malibu's/Impala's should be outlawed for LEO's! K-9 works best with SUV'S. When I was a k-9 handler I was also the SWAT commander, a SGT. and an ET. No room in my Crown Vic either. The trunk is an option but not very tactical as far as quick deployment. I was involved in a shooting while as a k-9 handler ,and my rifle was in the trunk. I had no time to get to it, Handgun worked but It took a few rounds. The rifle would have been better due to distance and cover by the offender.

Lt, I appricate your comments. I work for a great depatment and Sheriff, K9s are slowing being upgraded into Tahoe's, as Impalla's are replaced.  But being the jr handler and 4 others ahead of me for a SUV I am trying to do what I can whith what I have.  I know in time I will have a SUV and I would normally be very squeaky,  however the problem is know and slowly being corrected.  My current Sheriff is trying to replace a lot of gear the former Sheriffs failed to keep current.

I am a firm believer, you always go to a gunfight with a longgun.  My sidearm although lethal, is best suited to fight my way to a rifle.

I've seen one of the Department's upstate that just pulled out the passenger front seat and then mounted all the gear in the empty space including a 2 gun vertical rack.  I totally agree with not using an Impala for K9, actually, I feel sorry for the officers at my agency that have to squeeze into one, with a prisoner cage....

I drive a 2000 CV.  Untill recently I didnt even have a long gun.   I have to keep it in the trunck as well.  I like the idea of pulling the passanger seat  I may have to look into that.

I don't know much about an impala but in my crown I put my long guns in between the seat and the frame. Position it correctly and it doesn't mess with the seat belt and can be easily accessed by pulling the butt of the rifle or shotgun.

I have an older model Impala, 2003, and it sucks! M4 goes in the trunk and takes forever if its needed

IMPALA's suck all around!

Driving a crown vic however there are a couple of our k-9s in the impala.............................we have a vertical mounted dual gun rack that holds our ar-15 and remington 870 police....................it mounts between the seats muzzles up.......................only problem they have is the "quick deploy door" that allows the dog acces to the front seats is blocked by the rack

We use the quick release that opens the passenger side back door. that way we don't worry about the front being blocked. they work pretty good.
