They had a special the other night, and it stated that an entry level police officer in New York, their starting salary is around $23,500.  Can we hear from the NY LEO's, is this correct  or another inaccuracy by the media..........?  Sounds pretty low, but they swear they performed indepth research. Or did this relate to only the NYPD..?

Probably missed a digit .  LOL                  could be while they are in recruit school only.

I would tell you the deal they get at retirement but  it could ruin your week.

From what I heard it was 26,000 to start.  23,500 might be academy pay.

.....this is just disgusting.................a housekeeper out in the west  coast would get twice that pay, and they just clean the dirt off the furniture...........I've witnessed a few of my NY brothers state the retirement is not that bad, but don't get hurt, they drop you like a hot potatoe..........A Chief of Police, Federal, DOT, a friend of mine, dropped from an altercation backing up his officers and fell 15 feet.  He's paralized right now, and the way they treated him was just displorable.

Call the NYPD personnel and ask them, remember there's over 30,000 LEO's in NY, if they paid a higher salary, it could bankrupt the state even though they were given the higest payout from the 9-11 packages.

I myself was thrown back when I heard that, as out here in the West coast the average (average now) salary is about $80,000, with perks, a year.

I believe it's a little over 25,000 to start and 32, 000 ish after the academy that why they are leaving in droves for other departments. It was an arbitration ruling several years ago and since then it's been downhill for the poor cops. Hell, a patrolman is my old department with max longevity is over 90K a year. We retire at 25 years/65% of base salary plus full medical/prescription.

That's truly pathetic................staying with MOM and DAD the first 5 years is almost a given. And since NY seems to be in the cross-hairs of our enemies from you know where, you'd think these salary would be high, instead the officers are leaving in droves..............................

They have had cops arrested for committing robberies to subliment their income! My nephew was in NYPD and left for a small town in Upstate New York when he is making a lot more money and doesn't have a two and a half hour commute each day!

They make a little more than us to begin with but on the other end, they make a whole lot more. We just got a good raise that will give us 5% each year over the next 3 years.

Out in the West Coast you see nothing less than $65,000 for starters.  Damn, they commit robberies to supplement their salary...? Stupid question..........they don't live by the oath....?

I hope that this isn't correct. My brother is a CO and he called me and said I could start out at $40 G's.

You hope what isn't correct..../? I need to clarify, I suppose.........................PO's salary is what I stated. Now I'm talking about Northern California. Don't think it's much different in Southern California.  But, CO's that are not peace officers would get the lower salary as you stated. There's a difference. Example; in San Francisco. where the Sheriff's Department  handles the jails, it also has other field units, and are sworn peace officers. No difference that our brothers in blue (Sheriff is green) .  Yet others who are CO's, not complete POST Academy trained but a CO training for jails only may have a slightly lower salary.  Hope that clears it up.

Everywhere you go is gonna be different.  Our department starts mid 30's but I just had a school where the Instructor is from southern VA area and has been there quite some time, ranked, and last year made around 28.  No one ever said this job would make you rich, but some places, WOW  it amazes me they can keep anyone employed for the pennies that get paid.

Police on the West Coast are required to have what education level. New York requires High School or GED and two years in Military or 60 credit hours of college. I do believe the requirement on the West Coast is for a BA ?

I can remember back in the early 80s' , the Houston Police Recruiters were on the road and came to All the Massachusetts Police Departments and they were offering over 30,000.00 to start. They at that time were suffering from a loss of many Officers killed In The Line Of Duty. The recruiters were offering transportation and moving expenses. It all depends on timing.

The starting salary for an NYPD recruit is 25,100 pay and benifits.  32,700 out of the accadamy and 59,588 after 5 1/2 years.  I working in Rockland County NY and many officers from the NYPD took jobs in the county due the difference and salary. A top grade officer in my old department has to be making close to if not $100,000.

ilegworldchamp-

There's diversity in the state of CALIFORNIA Depends on what department your eyeing.  The mandatory BS degree for hiring is becoming very popular. High school diploma is just not enough anymore in metropolitan areas.  San Frncisco's starting salary is around $50,000+, but you go down just thirty five miles to Milpitas, California and your looking at $75,000.00 to $85,000.00 for starters plus perks for a second language, nigh differential and OT. One San Francisco Sheriff's Deputy pulled in over $130,000.00 last year due to OT.  Who knows when he slept. California POST training is one of the best in the country and the pay shows that. Because of the vast population there is, no shortage over here for applicants.  Just several months ago, there was a testing for a fireman's opening, two thousand showed up for just seven openings.  Same with LEO's
