I would like if only police officers current and retired can answer this question. I graduated from the police academy back in 2002,  but never landed a job with a department. I am currently awaiting to hear back from the City of Cleveland as to when I start with them as a Corrections Officer. My goal is to become a police officer and this is a step in that direction. I am 36 years old so I know my window if getting smaller. But even if I can get on part time with a department I would be happy with that...

My question is this, and I will in no way be upset. But how do you as police officers see us as corrections. Do you see us as one of your brothers or sisters.

Yes we go through the academy, but not the police academy.

Yes we have to know alot of the laws but not all the laws that you have to know.

Yes we carry side arms, but only in transport, or patrol, or details that take us off grounds.

We are commissioned as Private Police, you are commissioned as Police Officers

Yes we help by doing alot of the processing so you can get on the road, but we are not on the road with you.

I know that in every field we all have our own jobs, but where is it that you see us in light of where you stand.

I still consider you a brother/sister in LE. Corrections is just another job in the Justice system. We all have risks out there. Stay safe!

I started off as a CO so I know where you're coming from. The way I see it is like this. COs work in a "city" that's residents are 100% convicted criminals with little to no weapons and little to no back up. We deal with the degenerates we arrest for a short time then drop them off at your door step and you have hem for the rest of their sentence. You are forgotten in the eyes of the general public and on top of all this your pay is ridiculous. My hat is off to you brother. Be safe.

There is nothing wrong with the corrections field, I have nothing but respect for the men and women who work in the jails and prisons, but if your heart is really in wanting to be a police officer, then keep trying and make sure that you do what is necessary to keep your POST certificate up to date. Good luck

LIFE'S JOURNEY IS NOT TO ARRIVE AT THE GRAVE SAFELY IN A WELL PRESERVED BODY BUT RATHER TO SLIDE IN SIDEWAYS, TOTALLY WORN OUT, SHOUTING "HOLY SHIT....WHAT A RIDE"

I work in our County Jail and for a Town Police Department, so I see both sides. CO's are just as much part of the Justice System as Police, Probation, etc.. Some of the best Police Officers I know worked in the Jail for some time. It is a great place to get some experience.

Wow...this topic has been beat to a pulp......WE are all part of this crazy non-sensical law Enforcement puzzle.......Corrections,Police,Courts,Parole....we all play a part. This ething is like a pissing contest.....the truth of the matter is that no matter what agency you are from when you come across one of the 'good guys' scrambling around on the ground with a perp mutt im sure that cop in question is not going to take time mulling over whether or not you are considered 'law enforcmenet'.....we ALL face the same mnster. Bleieve me...the MONSTER is out there...you carry a badge? Then YOU  are LEO. Enough with this already......Only young officers new to 'the job' buy into this 'we r better then them' mentality...only a true seasoned officer realizes that we are all in thie shitsoup together....Come vist us at NYC DEpt of Corrections Rant And rave site.....be safe

I started out in the Missouri Department of Corrections for 6 years before going to my academy and am ever thankfull for the interpersonal skills I leared and developed as a CO.  As a Police Officer 1 in 20 (a conservitive estimate) of the people I meet are convicted felons or violent offenders, as a CO that is all I dealt with and was forced to learn their ways.  To this day I can pick out a bad guy in a crowd and am proud of the fact that I have been able to talk my way out of fighting the vast majority of the suspects I arrest.  I learned quick in the DOC that the older bones get the slower they heal and workers comp doesnt pay the bills.  Get some life EXPERIENCE before jumping in with both feet, You'll be glad you did.
