Opinions on NJ agencies

Posted 3 months ago Not sure if we have many LEO's on here from NJ, but I am researching some of the "best" agencies to work for in NJ. I live in Union County and am looking to stay somewhat local. Does anyone know anything about the Springfield NJ dept? From what I hear many of their officers only start out there and stay for two years or so. Please give me your opinions. By-the-way, I am looking for non-civil service towns. Thanks! |

Contact the New Jersey Department of Personnell. They handle all police testing and may have a listing of both Civil Service and Non-Civil service departments. I personally think you are foolish if you take a non-civil service department over a civil service department because you have a lot less protection. Just my opinion after serving almost 27 years in a Civil Service Department and listening to the horror stories from guys who were not.

| Posted 3 months ago I used to work in a city near Springfield and can tell you that place was very political. Getting hired and promoted in NJ is political to begin with. Civil service can also be manipulated. Piss off the mayor and have someone in your family piss off the mayor or city council when you are trying to get hired and the great civil service test will just freeze. I have to admit Civil Service offers more protection then my LE job I have now in Arizona. But I have seen alot of the people that got promoted to supervisors from civil service testing that were the most terrible cops. Also residency back there sucks, you have to live in the city you work in to take the test. Good luck Try Newark or Jersey City they hire alot of cops! |

| Posted 3 months ago Try any department in Somerset County. They are all non-Civil-Service. Some of the larger agencies in Somerset County are Franklin Twp., Hillsborough Twp., Bridgewater Twp., Bernards Twp. and Montgomery Twp. Among the smaller PDs (20-30 LEOs) that pay decently are North Plainfield, Bound Brook and Somerville. The Somerset County Police Academy also runs an Alternate Route Program where you can pay your own way through the training program. A lot of PDs hire Alternate Rooute Officers before graduation. Good Luck. |

| Posted 3 months ago Well, I am almost in the academy (Union County) through the Alternate Route program - which then says that I can only work for a non-civil service town starting off. I saw mentioned here twice that civil service towns offer more "protection". Sorry if it sounds like I am asking ignorant questions but I am new to this. What do you mean by more protection? Thank you all for your replies - they were very helpful! |
