Getting involved in a canine unit. need to know where to purchase equipment, or find additional training. Prefer shopping with companies that will send catalogs.

Equipment, at mininum; short lead, say 4 to 6 inches. Medium lead, about a 6 footer. Then 2 or 3 more from 12 feet to about 25 feet long depending on what your K-9 will be doing. A QUALITY muzzel is a must. Are you doing any tracking/trailing work? If so, a QUALITY tracking harness, (adjustible) with removable, Velcro type, reflective markings, removable so you can train without them to save life of the reflective strip. A QUALITY K-9 first aid kit with PROPER emergency medications for accidental O.D. or injuries. BTW a Vet should be consulted for ANY meds you plan to give the K-9, most doseages are by weight of the K-9 or even if it needs med's or forced/induced vomiting. No tip water and/or food bowels. A QUALITY K-9 vehicle transport system. Notice the word QUALITY? The $$$ you invest will go a long way to protecting the K-9. The equipment needs to be comfy for the K-9, NOT you or your check book!

As far as additional training, what type of K-9 unit are you getting involved in? I think any advanced medical, (Vet), classes or training is well worth the time and effort to your K-9.  There are mixed views, ideas and methods for all types of training. Old school ways of physcial training, correction and disipline to enforce or re enforce commands or actions to "new" ways of using coresive methods.                                I have found that Tri-Tronics E-collars with adjustible stimulation is an effictive "middle of the road" method of training. If using ANY type of E-collar, make sure a trainer well versed in their use helps you learn how to use it prior to introducing it to the K-9. If over used or used at the wrong time, it's bad juju for you and the K-9.

Purchasing equipment; Most of your leads, muzzel and harness should be available local, check with your local P.D. or Sheriff dept, or a local hunting club. The internet is full of venders for special items, Ray Allen etc. Go online and find them, see what you like and request a catalog if you want one.

Just remember, K-9 training will drive you mad, batty, make you laugh and cry at the same time. Stay calm and consistant, frustration will go down the lead to the K-9 and the K-9 will "feel you" and react to your emotions good and bad!

Mine is only one of MANY ideas, there are hundreds if not thousands of ideas of methods, equipment and training, not all are right not all are wrong. It's up to you to decide what works best for you and your K-9's mission.
