The best thing is to not show any breaks in your employment history, without a viable explanation, such as a birth of a child, attending school, etc.  If you have gotten w-2 forms from those jobs, that is a checkable record and should be submitted.  If you were working off the books, which is illegal, you have to explain your means of support during that time period.

Honesty is the best policy when it comes to the application packet. They will normally figure it out anyway. They are going to call everyone that you put down plus they will contact people that know you that you didnt put down.

good luck

Be as detailed and list as much information as possible on all parts of the application. The more forthcoming and honest you are. The quicker the background process will go for you. I wish you luck in your process.

If it's asking for all jobs.  Put all jobs down because is going to come out in the background anyway.  I just did a couple of apps for laterals and they only wanted the last 10 years.  So I gave them the last 10 and nothing else.  following directions is part of being a cop.  Good luck.

I have completed a few pre-employment background investigations and if you don't put all your work history down  it will hurt your chances no matter how good of an applicant you are.  Have you ever heard the phrase, "lying by omission"?  Be up-front and honest and let the chips fall as they may.  Most departments will also ask you to list all the LE departments you have applied for.  A potential employer will look into your entire past history.  Good luck.

BUMP! This goes ESPECIALLY for any time of Federal job (LE or otherwise).

In most cases you do not have to have a Police job to get another one.  Police Offcier is an entry level position, some agencies accept lateral transfers, meaning prior CERTIFIED Police Officers can be placed in the job, with out going to a full academy.

Fairfax County PD just instituted a program for officers who transfer within the Commonwealth of Virginia from other agencies in the state. You must attend classes at the academy before going on to your FTI. Chesapeake PD, VA requires all officers (including transfers) to go through the entire academy regardless of your prior police service.

Like everyone says, make sure you list all your jobs. The dept you're applying to will check up on it, and if you omit any, it will look like you're trying to hide something. I would definitely list your bartending exp, as it may not be LE related, but it is a people oriented position, requiring you to deal with numerous people (as well as numerous DK people).

I sometimes do background ivestigations for my department. We have a page for employment going back seven (7) years asking for all employers. All means ALL. It also advises to list any periods of unemployment. If gaps in employment dates occur I call the person and ask about the missing information. I have used this as a reason to DQ someone if they cannot provide the inforamtion required. It also indciates that they are not reading what is asked and shows that they cannot follow directions. When I started with my department we went back to age 17 asking for all employment history. We have a separate page asking if they have applied for any other police agency in state or out. Asking dates and results of the application with the other department.
