Okay I am currently going for my AS in Criminal Justice at Herkimer County Community College online. I want to be a CSI. How do I get there?? Is there some other classes I should take besides the regular courses required for the AS in CJ?? I was thinking about doing some ride-alongs and maybe a civilians program, would that help?

Very few community colleges offer courses in CSI (evidence collection, crime scene photo, forensics and many others), . Also some LE agencies (depending on size) have there own CSI (which may or may not be sworn positions), further some agencies require you to complete their academy, be a cop for a couple of years and submit or compete to be a part of their CSI team. Do your reseach with the agency you would like to be a part of.

Thank you, where I live is just a bunch of small towns w/ one detective for every 3 departments. I am probably going to have to relocate for this postion.

it may seem like a hard way to get there, but chemistry and biology are courses you should consider also which= 4yrs at least instead of 2. Might want to check w/someone in csi to see if they'll advise you also.

Here's what I mean, I worked for a small PD in California (85 sworn) we had a Detective Bureau (8 officers), but for major crimes (murder) we had to call the L. A. County Sheriff's Office to investigate and they had their CSI team come out to the scene. But a surrounding agency with a slightly larger force (115) had there own team but still with-in the county, but keep in mind that small agencies with their own team don't have frequent openings. Lots of things to consider.

I would look at a 4-year school to finish your degree and I have seen the job postings for openings in the CSI field and most of the postings I have seen say a Bachelors degree is required. I know some 4-year universities offer Criminal Forensics as a degree program and the couple people I know in that particulate L.E. field took got their degrees in Criminal Forensics.

If this helps I had an Introduction to Forensics course, and my instructor said during the class that in order to get into CSI someone would need at least a BS.  You need a lot of science courses, depending on whether or not you wanted to work in the lab or the street doing the actual crime scene.

I would either check with the closest big city agency or make an appointment to talk to the head of their CSI unit.  Believe me I’ve done so many ride a longs, and nothing ever really happened.  You could also check online for colleges that offer CSI courses, American Military University, Saint Leo University online/distance learning.  You don’t have to be in the military to attend American Military University.  Kaplan College and ITT tech offer classes just be careful to make sure the school is certified.
