My department recently had training on Excited Delirium and we were shown a few videos of subjects in this state. One video actually shows the officer arriving at the scene, going hands on with the subject, and the man actaully dies right there before he is even completely restrained. It happened so fast.

I was wondering if anyone can give me more informrmation on the medical aspect of this...I know the basic underlying factors of what can cause a person to go into this state and such, but I would like to know more information. Why are men more prone to this then woman? I know a persons Ph levels change but how exactly? things like this. We also had training on the Chemical Restraint method when you actaully sedate the subject with a needle. But our department also heard that a possible nasal spray was being produced since it would be easier to administer a nasal spray then give someone a shot while they are in this state. Any information on that? Millions of people have been doing drugs a long time and in large amounts, but they dont get into this state. Many people take perscription drugs and have psychological disorders and don't get into this state either. So what excatly causes this? I am very intrigued by this excited delirium.

Also, any videos of subjects with excited delirium would be very helpful. I personally feel this is a very serious thing for not just LEO's, but the public, and tthe people who reach this state. These people have super human strength and feel no pain. Information on this topic needs to be given out to everyone becuase this is a serious condition. Thank you for your help in advance!!

One of the main factors in excited delirium is the body loses the ability to regulate temperature.  When I had CIT training, we were told about one person whose body temperature was 106,  12 hours AFTER death.  I believe the brain's regulatory functions cease to work properly, hence the increased body temp, pain tolerance, etc.  We were told that people with seevre mental illness, not all of course, and those on drugs are the most likely to succumb.  I would suspect that more men suffer because they are more prone to fight, biologically.  The key is that if you have to vigorously fight someone to restrain them, always always always seek immediate medical attention.  I would also reason that whether a mentally ill or drugged person experiences excited delirium is dependent on several biological factors of the individual, just like any other disease process.  If I can find more on it, I'll let you know.  We've been training onm it for a few years now thanks to the CIT program we adopted from TN, I think.  It's imperative that all LE knows about it, but even more importantly, the medical examiner's who are doing autopsies after a suspect dies.  They're not all on board or even know about this yet.
