Crime Patterns
*What do some of you seasoned officers have to say? It would be interesting to hear from experience. Ecology- Most crime occurs in the summer; most property crime occurs during the day time, during the week (M-F); most violent crime occurs during the night, on weekends; (here is something interesting and mind boggling Social Class- (This is more of an open ended discussion question and I am not intending it to start any battles!) Do those in lower socioeconimc situations committ more crimes? - Maybe yes - Maybe no Age - As a rule, property crime peaks at age 16 and violent crime at age 18 Gender - Males are responsible for about 80% of crime Race**- African Americans make up 12% of U.S. population, but account for 38% of violent and 30% of property crime **this statement was based on the statistics presented to me in my text book and in my class lecture Career Criminals- Today - 10% of the offenders committ 50% of the crime
This is some interesting stuff we are learning in class and this is stuff I didn't even know until now. It is really eye opening and mind boggling in some cases. Here are the links my professor gave us if any one else wants to use them or needs them as references for class or reports. http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/NACJD/NIBRS/ http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/cvict.htm Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

| Posted 4 months ago We spend 90% of our time dealing with the 10% that commit 50% of the crimes. How many of your professors have cop experience? Probably very few, especially the Ph.D.'s who belive that their two-year campus police internship equaled cop time. |

Agreed.... i will say that i agree about the temperature influence. I've always said that the crime rate goes up with the temperature! People tend to be out and about more and tempers tend to flare faster. More crime in the south? I havent seen the rough data but it's kinda hard to believe when you consider places like LA, NY and Cleveland. They told (us) to open up the Embassy, or "we'll blow you away." And then they looked up and saw the Marines on the roof with these really big guns, and they said in Somali, "Igaralli ahow," which means "Excuse me, I didn't mean it, my mistake".

Both of my professors are former LEOs. My Advanced Criminology professor was in corrections for quite some time and is head of our Justice Studies department and my other professor (who also teaches our Public Safety and Health Administration classes) is a former Sheriff's Deputy. Both have spent extensive time studying their fields and the latter has also had the privelage of exploring and researching other LE agencies around the coutnry and Canada. That's one reason why I chose this university and like this program. The professors actually know, first hand, what they are teaching and aren't just "wanna bes". The data that was presented to us was gathered from the UCR, NIBRS, DOJ and other crime statistic reporting agencies. Information was also presented to us from our text book 'Criminology 9th edition' by Larry J. Siegel. The information presented to us, I do believe, is at least 2 years old since the current UCR (2007) is only in its preliminary stages. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

Still, it is nice to compare what we learn in class to those who actually live it and work it day in and day out. Input and opinions from actively serving LEOs definitely gives those of us who are learning these things a much broader perspective. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

I agree with you. When the heat goes up so does people's tempers. I have seen more fistfights in the shop floor during the summer then in any other season. People are uncomfortable from the heat and can get easily angered by another person. |

| Posted 19 days ago The scientists and "experts" claim there is no correlation between a full moon and increased crime. I say, just ask anybody in emergency services! If you've ever worked the street, an ER, or a jail, you KNOW that more people get stupid when the moon is full. Why do you think they call it "looney" as in lunar? Anybody else agree or disagree with this? |
) crime peaks at 85°; the South has the highest crime rate.
