It insults the hell out of me!! wagoncop said that.

hard to come up with an ethnic slur that has less of a sting than "whitey."

A prevalent yet unsubstantiated Internet rumor has it that Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, used this term at some point in a speech, and the Obama campaign is concerned enough to have posted an online rebuttal.I've got to ask, though. Are there really white people out there so ignorant of history, so unaware of the nuances of language and so threatened by minority grievances that they take genuine umbrage at the term "whitey"?

Those who take offense are confusing prejudice—which is making negative assumptions about people based solely on external characteristics, of which all races and ethnicities are guilty—with racism, which is prejudice in action.

And if they're really that dumb, then I guess they deserve to be insulted.

NOTE: This is not the whole Chicago Tribune article, IF you want to read it all http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-change_whiteyjun15,0,981005.story

Whitey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Open in New Window

Whitey may refer to: Whitey, in African-American slang , is a term for white people whose attitude is seen as representative of The Man . However, it is considered an ethnic slur ...

In the original, which I cannot find now,but I posted this A.M. it had Eric Zorn as the wruter in that article he also diminished the word "honkey",

Honky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Look up honky, honkey, hunkey in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. Honky, Honkey or Honkie is a predominantly American pejorative racial slur for white people. ...(W.C.s note: it is my understanding "honkey" was a term coined as an insult to white men who honked at black women while looking hor sex, since I am not guilty of such an offensive act I am in fact insulted)!

The purpose of this post is to show how far the Chicago machine can go to make their candidate, Obama, look good even if it means trying to make white people believe they are not being insulted when they are!

Sure it's an insult. And if Cindy McCain used some sort of ethnic slur on the campaign trail, the media would absolutely destroy Sen. McCain by playing it over and over. I for one am absolutely sick of the double standard!

Well we always seem to come back around to the fact that some people don't just want equal rights they want special rights. How many generations are we going to be expected to pamper somebody for the sins of our forefathers?

I am offended, but usually consider the source and laugh. I am more offended by the double standards that are the rule rather than the exception.

It depends on how long we are willing to put up with it. As long as we sit back and just take it, we will be dealing with this type of thing. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I believe this is part of the problem.

Absolutely a double standard.  My first experience with this was in college.  A guy who happened to be African-American was smashing the windows out of his ex-girlfriends car with a baseball bat.  As an Intern Officer I felt almost sure I was supposed to do something about it.  SO I called for back up, a Campus Police unit arrived and we approached the guy with our weapons drawn.  We talked him into dropping the bat and he surrendered.  The next day I found myself in the Chiefs office explaining why I drew my weapon on a guy who was armed with a base ball bat!?!?!   The guys parents said it was because he was black.   Be asured that if ANYONE was armed with a bat and smashing car windows I would consider them to be a deadly threat regardless of race.

I have never been fond of the words people choose to use to try to slam an individual based on their skin color. The "N" word repluses me coming out the mouth of any person of any color. I've never been called "whitey" but I did have a colored individual call me a "cracker". I did my best not to laugh at her ridiculous attempts to offend me, but when she asked "do you want some cheese with that, cracker" I laughed histerically and realized the race card seems to only come into play when an individual has no other excuse for their wrongful behavior.

A couple of years ago, one of our officers had his baton taken from him when a guy snuck up behind him. The POT hit the officer in the back of head hard enough to cause that bled as if he had been shot. The officer dropped to his one knee and thankfully still had the presence of mind to draw his weapon, spin around and shoot him. I thought there was going to be a riot over the whole thing! The black community came out (including several black ministers) and spoke out against the officer shooting an "unarmed" man. Obviously, it was ruled a justifiable homicide and the officer is now a detective.

Of course there is a double standard in this country.  And that's true for more than just race.  Personally, I don't get offended.  You can call me anything you want.  I know who I am and what I am and couldn't care less about the opinion of someone I've never met.   In other threads we tell the new guys they need a thick skin and to not become offended when people call us Pigs or other not so nice names for cops.  Then we run to another thread and talk about being offended over name calling.   I tell people all the time that we learned in 1st grade that names can't hurt us.  If they call you a bad name just consider yourself the better person and move on with your life.  Pent up hostility and unnecessary negative emotions just cause ulcers and headaches.   But that's just my opinion.

I don't get offended by someone calling me something because like you, I am very secure in who I am. Besides the older I get the less I care what others think anyway. The part that is offensive to me is the double standard.

I can understand the bitter pill of double standards.  I just don't feel like "offended" is the correct terminology for it.  Women get offended by dirty jokes.  Homosexuals get offended by gay references.  Sanitation Engineers get offended when you call them janitors.  This politically correct world we live in is become so ridiculous as to be laughable and depressing at the same time.   I find the double standards of the race issue to be annoying.  I never owned a slave and neither did anyone else in my family.  EVER.   So to hear that I owe somebody something for events that occurred many generations ago is maddening.  But I don't take offense.   It's just in the same category as most other stuff that bothers me about liberals

Yes it's an insult and white trash is very insulting.  There should be no such thing as the term "reverse discrimination".  It should be classified as discrimination and affirmative action should be to protect everyone from discrimination.

As I said above, I don't let the names bother me, but am offended by the double standard. My children were never taught to distinguish people by color. When my daughter was in second grade, she was trying to tell me about a certain teacher. I couldn't figure out who she was talking about. She said, "She's the brown one." Remember, I'm from that backwards Southern state with the stereotype of racial prejudices and hatred; Mississippi. BTW, slaves were outlawed by the time my forefathers arrived in the US.

The most simple reply is "where is it coming from and what is the intent of the use?". Conversely, would Blacky not be considered an insult in 99% of the population? I do not see a way that it could be used in a non-chalant way or as brushed off as being non-racial. Myself, being Native American, would not appreciate being referred to as a "brownie" or a "white brownie" due to my complexion. Equal rights equals equal standards to be held accountable for. If you can do it, don't get pissed if someone else does it. If you are above doing it, then be offended and make a difference and not an excuse.

I really don't get offended when I am called names. I was a cop too long to let it bother me anymore. Like some of you though I do get rather upset with those people that make an issue out of race or skin colour and/or have and promote double standards. Do not tell me that I owe anyone something because a half dozen generations before someone may have been held in slavery. Lots of people have from all races and nationalities. It's not done now so get over it. I do not think anyone should get preferential treatment over another simply because of the pigment of their skin. I do not see the need for the NAACP, The Negro Collage Fund, Miss Black America, or any other organizations that cater to only Blacks or some others that cater to only Mexicans, or whatever. Having them for Whites only was wrong and it is just as wrong to have them for anyone else only. I judge people for who THEY are and what THEY believe in and how it relates to me. Skin colour does not come into play over it, nor should it. If you have a problem with this idea then I believe it is you that has the problem and not me. People like Jackson and Sharpton who make a living out of continuing hatred between people of different races make me sick and I cannot stand them, they are WRONG. Those people that are planning on voting FOR Obama for no other reason than they feel it is about time a Black man is President or "he is one of our own" you disgust me. Those that are planning on voting AGAINST Obama just because he is Black I have similar feelings about. If people do not start looking beyond race then we are in deep crap, all of us.
